Tho commltteo on good roads of the Chamber of Commerce la working on the program for tho good roada con vention to bo held hero uext month, In connection with tho sample of road building to bo given by tho gov ernment. If tho committee's plans carry the convention will ho a great succesa and of interest to every one Interested In good roads and of value to the state, this community es pecially. It la tho purposo of the government in building sample roads in varioua sections to show what can be accomplished by scientific ef forts. The local committee will en dcacor to have as many as possible take advantage of the demonstration. Yesterday the committeo announc ed a partial program, showing somo of those it now seems assured will attend and some of the subjects that will be treated. Governor Lanham has given his word that he will be present and an effort is being made to get him to deliver an address. Mr. Martin Dodge, chief of the bureau of good roads Inquiry of the Depart ment of Agriculture, will be here and will speak. President W. H. Moore of the National Good Roads Asocla tlon will deliver an address and a talk will be made by Mr. O. P. Bow ser, president or tho state association and the father of good roads in Tex as. Illustrated Lecture. One evening while tho convention is here, probably the first, a banquet will be given and night session of speeches held. It is probable that at that time the illustrated lecture by Mr. M. O. Eldridge will be given. This, it is expected, will prove one of the most interesting features 01 the convention, as the stereoptlc.-ra views will show the road systems and the development thereof of every country in the world. Another speaker will be Col. R. W. Richardson, the government expert in charge of the road building. Judge R. B. Green of Bexar county ha also consented to make a speech. Senator G. B. Griggs of HoiiRton, the author of the Griggs amendment which comes to vote at the pools this fall and which the people of this community are greatly Interested in, will attend and will probably deliver in address. Other probable speakers will be President S. R. Knott of the Kansas City Southern, Judge Blake Dupree of Harris county. Judge TJ. P. Wheat of Jefferson countv. Vice President and General Manager Thcrnwall Fav of the Southern Pa cific, Industrial Agent A. T. Atwater of the Southern Pacific. Prof. Con nell of the A. and M. ' College and others. Perhaps a U. S. Senator. There Is a possibility that Unitea States Senator Latitimer of South Carolina will attend, as Senator I,at timer Is greatly Interested In ail good road movements, having been the author of considerable good road leg islation. Mr. John KTrby has said he will attend, as has Mr. Frank R. Hol land of Dallas.' An effort will be made at the convention to organize a permanent "Southwest Texas Good Roads Association." The committee was able yesterday to announce only a part of the sub jects that will bo treated In tho Ice ures and speeches. Some of these, however, will be as follows: "The Object Lesson of Road Work," "Eco nomical , Practical and Permanent Building by Committee." "History of the Good Roads Movement In the I'nited States," "Influence of G001 Roads on the Development of Texas," "State and Federal Aid In Road Building."
