states the Southern
Air Line Although
in the So ffi
and the ivffi i
it has not beeTTI
iicially announced it is believed here th
the Atlantic Coast Line and the Plant sys
tem will soon come tinder control of he
Southern railway and that the culmination
of the deal will be a community of in
terests
The roads controlled by the Iouisvillo
and Nashville are the Nashville Chatta
smaller lines in Alabama
Including the mileage of both their
main lines and the recently acquired
roads the number of miles included in ttm
new merger under control of the Southern
aggregates 31349
An interesting feature of the situation
is the Hart estate of Georgia may be
placrd in tho rumored combination The
estate owns the Western and Atlantic which
runs from Atlanta to Chattanooga and is
leased by the Nashville Chattanooga and
St louts
The Southern is already operating a line
between these cities and the Central of
Georgia which Is under tho control of the
Southern has a road from Chattanooga to
Griffin Ga The effect of the purchase of
the Louisville and Nashville is said by
some to mean that at the expiration of
the present lease on tho State road the
Stata road will be completely bottled up
rendering it merely a local line between
Atlanta and Chattanooga When asked
his opinion on the matter Governor Can
dler said I dont think there is any
danger of the roads bottling up the State
road While railroad combinations are very
powerful they can not cope with the State
of Georgia for if such attempts were made
the result would be such drastic legisla
tion in Georgia that the railroads would
have to pay out more money than they
could make on the transaction
The railroads may attempt to depreci
ate the value of the State railroad in or
der to get the State to sell it at a low
price hut such an effort would also fail
The people of Georgia willprotect their
interests in the matter and nobody need
have any fear on that score
The Atlanta and West Point and the
Western of Alabama constituting a line
from Atlanta to Selma Ala will come un
der the supposed merger as both are con
trolled indirectly by the Southern and
Louisville and Nashville
Louisville Ky April ii Nothing defi
nite could be learned today of the deal
whereby the Southern railway is reported
to have obtained control of the Louisville
and Nashville road Officials of the later
line refused to say anything on the sub
ject
Vice President Walter Hines when
shown the statement sent out by the Asso
ciated Press from New York said that he
had no knowledge of the matter

the rivers and harburs bill passed by the
house the maximum mm of 30000 was
designated out of the total of 50000 to
be applied to the purchase of the canal
The mute committee on commerce adopt
ed an amendment presented hy Senator
Bailey cutting the maximum price from
tjoooo to 15000 thus leaving 35000
for the remainder of the improvement Mr
Masterson and his associates believe that
the canal is worth considerably more than
15000 and say they will not sell at that
price An effort will be mado to have
the conference committee make a change
in the item It is claimed it would cost
the government 50000 to construct a
canal of its own
