POETRY. JFrom the Ntw*York Commercial Advertiser. THE EAGLE. Mark’d ye the Eagle rising high, His wings expanded in the sky? Behold! he soars with lofty mind. He leaves the winds of heaven behind. And rising upwards, nobly prtud, He seeks his home within the cloud: Behold his strong and stately form Contending sternly with the storm, With plume unscorch’d, with unscath’d limb, The lightning flies, but blasts not him! Thus. Genius, can thy soul sublime Resist the stormy night of Time— Breakthrough the clouds that veil thy sky, And triumph o’er adversity, Thy beacon, which gives light afar, Is glory’s bright and matin star—. Thv track is virtue’s, and thine airs For honor and undving fame. Yes—when thv prison house of clay Is mould’ringin the grave’s decay, Thy nonument extends on high, Which Time doth harmlessly pass by. Nor from the golden arch of fame Doth he erase thv hallow’d name. Thv spirit with its wing unfurl'd Bpreads its broad shadow o'er the world* An 1 fetterless it soars on high To seek a home within the ^kv— In the blue fields of yonder heaven, The fount from which thv fires are given! (FLORTO. FOR THE GAZETTE. THE OLD TRUNK, No. V. THE SEDUCER. [CONTINUED.] At the breakfast table, in a tone calcu lated to «oothft the feelings of the stranger. Mr. Ellington informed his wife and daugh ter of his intended residence with them. The matron, with a placid smile received the intelligence, expressing the happiness it afforded her. But Evelyn perceived, in the dash of joy that beamed from the eyes of the lovely Emily, more than she herself knew, or knowing, would herself have willingly acknowledged. From that mo ment were his dark determinations fixed; the enjoyment of her charms freed from the shackles of matrimony, was his ob ject; and to attain this end, be resolved to assume that course of conduct towards each party as would have the greatest ten dency to deceive them into a good opi nion of himself. For this purpose, to the father of Emily be appeared the most can' did, the most honorable ot men; whilst in JMr*. Ellington, bis respectful and atten tive conduct had excited an almost mater nal partiality To Emily he seemed tim' id and reserved; but oft would she en counter bis dark eye, gazing with the most impetuous ardor o’er every lineament ot j her countenance, and when accidentally he has held her hand within his own, she has lelt the vibration that appeared to a giiate its every fibre; nor could Iter own bos >m suppress the responsive glow, the sympathetic contact created—in short, E mily loved! The invidious Evelyn had ue glected no oppor»unity or means ot en- ; grossing her affections: the poison of lore had become the boisterous inmate of her j bosom, so late the abode of innocence and tranquility. Infatuated with his charms )n an evil hour the too tender Emily yield ed up her honor and her happiness; whilst Evelyn unmindful of the ties of gratitude or humanity, sacrificed them both {to the gratification of his own brutal passions! -Time rolled on with rapid wing, but found no alteration in the criminality ot their conduct, till at length Mr. Ellington, hiving some business of consequence to transact in a distant part of the country, requested Evelyn to superintend its settle meat. For that purpose he had been ab sent for some time, when Emily, oppress ed by shame and repentance, acknowledg ed her guilt to her parents. To express the feelings of the venerable authors of her being, would be a task of impossibili ty; none but a parent can torra an idea of them. One child beneath a watery billow, the other dishonored! and she, too, who had betu the object of their most anxious tenderness <$*»solicitude, the only source of their future joys and expectations. To behold that column of beauty and inno cence, whose superstructure lor years had employed their every thought and exer* tion, moulder into dust, and beneath the bands of him whom their benevolence had cherished, was a thought too replete with anguish to be endured.-Big emotions of revenge and insulted dignity swelled the breast of the venerable old man, but age and infirmity precluded the possibili ty ot their accomplishment .... A lew (lays transpired, and Evelyn re turned; unconscious ot the storm that a yraited him, he entered the house with a specious smile ot gratulations glowing in his countenance. Hut <carce had be cross ed the threshold, when the mother of Emi ly, with rage too powerful to he governed Carted upon him, and seizing him by the throat, exclaimed in a voice that sounded like the knell of death to his guilty soul— '“give me back, thou monster cl ingrati tude, the innocence of my child. Evelyn, conscious-struck for a moment, stood pas sive beneith the strong grasp of in dignant vir ue—but finding all was dis covered, be became desperate from the circum-tance, and determined to escape; but in endeavoring to extricate himself, the button of bis collar accidentally gave ^e-y^and discovered his naked breast._ Scarce bad the eyes of Mrs. Ellington lor an instant fixed their horror-struck gaze on the mark of a large mulberry that stood conspicuous on its front, than with a ciy of heart-writhing anguish, she exclaimed <‘Oh(iod! thy ways are just holy and in scrutable; hut why, O Lord, load thy ser yant with such complicated misery? Emi ly, behold in the destroyer ol th> virgin innocence, your only brother!”—Evelyn heard the word* of his mother, and with * cry of unutterable horror rushed from ihe house—nor did the receding senses of Emily fail to receive the full meaning of her mother’s exclamation; but the blow was too mighty, the shock too great for bu tton reason Icy sustain; she sunk beneath the effort: madness in its most deplorable was tb* consequence* a$d the fatui* 9 home of the unfortuoate Emity> was the maniac’s asylum. A few more dayS of misery rolled on at the mansion of Mr, Ellington, when intelligence was brought him that the body of Evelyn was found suspended from a tree, at a short distance from his habitation. The bearer of this information also produced a packet found in the pocket of the deceased, addressed to Mr, Ellington, in which, after many protestations of sincere repentance for the turpitude of bis conduct, he proceeded to inform him that, snatched at an early age from a watery grave by some gentlemen who accidentally happened to be on a fish ing party, he had been reared a foundling by them, a bachelor of large fortune, but licentious habits; that insensibility actuat ed by the examples daily affor led him, be had been led into the same courses of dis sipation and vice; that at the death of his benefactor he became heir to his wealth, which was only desirable in his eyes as it gave him the means of affording full scope to the gratification of bis profligate pro pensities; at length by a series of dis sipated and abandoned conduct, hav ing expended his fortune, he found him self a beggar, despised by the friends who had formerly courted his smiles, and justly abhorred by every good and moral man. Driven almost to despair by the neglect and detestation of all ranks of so ciety. he fled the place that had witnessed his enormity. For that purpose he set out on foot, and it wa9 late in ihe evening ol the sixth day, when passing near the man sion of Mr Ellington, fatigue induced him to stop to procure tome refreshment. Mr Ellington’s reception, and the consequen ces attending it, are well known to the reader!.Little more remains to be communicated, except that the body of Arthur Evelyn, or rather George Ellington, onsanctified with holy rites of burial, was privately interred at the nearest cross roads—Emily, blest with insanity, ended her days in a mad-houBe. • • , . . The hearts of Mr. and Mrs. Ellington, torne and lacerated by the weight of their misfortunes, soon bent be neath the stoke of death. One grave re ceived the hapless pair—one sod greened the last home of the unfortunate parents of George and Emily Ellington. OSMA.
