Industrial employment in nil parts of The country has been accelerated by adjustment of coal and rail strikes, although inade quate car and fuel supply lias retarded a turther improvement, the deutment of labor announced yesterday in a Mirvey of reporm from principal industrial cities. Reports from ',." leading cities showed nn increase in employment during Sep tember as compared with August, while 17 cities reporied decreases. Industries showing increased employment were rail road repair shops, tobacco and textile manufacturers, iron and steel and their products, fooil and leather, lumber, pa lter, printing and chemical and allied products. Decreased employment was disclosed in "liquor and beverages," vehicles for land transportation, 'metal and products other than iron and steel, and stone, clay and glass products. Building construction, said the survey is maintaining a steady pace in prac tically all sections, while ,the most en couraging sign of prosperity is the threatened common labor shortage every where. Elimination of transportation and fuel difficulties, the department de clared, "will speed production and employ ment "to a higher degree than has ob tained sineo the war." Adjustment of textile labor controver sies has "increased employment in that industry tremendously." while improve ment, in the textile situation was shown generally in New England. Reports from 1.4 2 concerns on Sept. 30 showed they had 2N,t'.0S more employes on their pay rolls than on Aug. 31. Rewards IHuncstic Virtue.
