The plcture has just been presented to the llbrary by Martln Chittenden's granddaughter, Mrs. Louiso (Chittenden) Smytli. a daught er of George W. Chittenden, a former resident of Randolph, who used to llve in the houso of Mrs. J. H. Moulton on School street. The daughter was marrled here July 2, 1861, to G. B. Smyth and now, aa tl.e last of her faniily she is an inmate of St. Luke's Home in New York. Tho commission of her maternal grand- slre, Httckins Storrs, as Heutonant in the army, whlch commission bears the signature of Pres'ident James Monroe, is also one of tho library's curios and hangs on its walls. In early life Governor Martln Chittenden devoted hlmself to agricultural pur- suits on account of hls feeble health but later entered publlc life. He was a member of the conventlon whlch adopted the constltutlon of the Unlt ed States. In 1790 he was elected county clerk and representative and was honored by re-election for six successive years. He was judge of the county court from 1790 to 1S03; a member of Congress from 1S03-1813 judge of probate from 1821 to 1S22. At theage of 33 he had attalned the rank of major-general in the luilitia. Hls term as Governor of the State was from 1S13 to 1814 and durlng tho war wlth England he refused to com ply wlth the reciuisitlon of General Macomb for the State mllltia. Tlils act was severely criticized at the tlme and prevented hls return to of flce. WATERBURY Tho funeral of Chnnles Antwine Devold was held at St. AndrewV church Saturday morning at ' 10 o'clbck.
