Just rae#i?#d aad for *ale by J*IfT MWAH WILL# Proposals for issuing the north Caro lina STANDARD, semi-weekly.—The un dersigned proposes to publish The North Caroli na Standard after the first of February, 1846, twice a week. Many democrats, in various quar ters of the State, desire this, and it is believed it can bo done, if exertions are made in its behalf among the democratic party generally. The im portance of such an issue is, it soems to the under signed, too apparent to require arguments in its favor. A acini-weekly paper ought surely to bo sustained by the democratic party of the State, (a party which casts 40,000 votes,) especially as the Federalists have txco Semi-weeklies, in addition to Iteo papers to our one in the State. Think of this, democrats, and of the influence which such publi cations must inevitably exert upon the public mind. The Weekly Standard will he published as heretofore, and, the undersigned flatters himself, will be much more interesting and valuable than it is at present. It will contain at least eight col ximns more qf reading matter than it does now. TERMS: The Semi-weekly Standard will be published at Four Dollars, if paid withir. the first three months, or Five Dollars, if delayed beyond that period ; and the weekly Standard at Three Dollars per annum, payable in advance. J Both the Weekly and Semi- Weekly will be print- j ed at the picsent size, on fine paper and with new j type Subscriptions to both papers are most re spectfully and earnestly solicited ; and subscribers ] to the present paper, who arc willing to take the Semi-Weekly instead of the Weekly, will please inform the undersigned of the fact, by letter or otherwise, on or bclerc the 8th of January, 1846. W. W.HOLDEN. Raleigh, Nov. 18, 1845.—Nov 22 (1REATLY REDUCED PRICE—FROM #5 TO S3 PER ANNUM. SINGI.E COPY 25 CENTS. PROSPECTUS OF THE NEXT (or 17th) VOL. j THE price of the Democratic Review has here- | toforc been too high—not for its size, cost, and [ character, hut for the means of tens of thousands l of readers who would be glad to receive It, and j among whom it is highly desirable that it should circulate. For the purpose therefore, of largely widening the range of its usefulness, and of multi plying the numbers of those to whom it may he ac cessible, it has been determined, simultaneously with the great reduction in the expense of the post age. to reduce its subscription price also, from Five to only Three dollars; and when several unite in subscription, to as low as $2 50, or even $2 30 per annum. This very large reduction in the receipts (accom panied with but a comparatively small diminution of its expenses) involves, of course, an entire sac rifice of profit upon it, unless compensated by a vast multiplication of its subscribers. There will he at the outset only a small reduction in its num ber of pages; soon to be restored to its old number, without increase of price, when the anticipated success of the experiment shall justify it. The Portraits of Distinguished Democrats will be continued—engraved in belter and more costly style than heretofore. The Postage will hereafter, for any distance, be only five and a half cents ; it lias heretofore been, for over 100 miles, eighteen cents. We look for an extension of circulation to be reckoned by tens of thoxuands, as the result and compensation of this great reduction of price.— Every friend of the work, and of the Democratic principles and canse, is confidently appealed to to exert himself with an active interest to procure it subscribers ; both to extend its usefulness, and to carry it successfully through the crisis of this great reduction of its receipts. Those who have paid in advance for the coming year, will receive it, at the reduced rate, for a year and a half. TERMS HENCEFORWARD. (INVARIABLY IN ADVANCE.) Single cony, - £3 00 I Eight copies, - £‘20 00 Four copies, - 11 00 | Thirteen “ - 30 00 It will thus be seen that when thirteen copies are ordered at once, the price is brought down to about £2 30 each. For six months, half the.se rales. These rates afford high inducements to agents and others to interest themselves to procure sub scribers. The cash system and payment in advance must be uncompromisingly adhered to. The past relaxa tion of it has caused an accumulation of not far from £40,000 of debts due to the work. Hereafter, this must he wholly reformed ; nor must cither the most eminent political friend, or the most intimate personal one, be displeased on experiencing its ap plication, in the stoppage of their numbers, if they neglect this rule ; the vital necessity of which, at the present reduced rates, must be obvious to all. No communications will be taken from the Post Office unless free of postage. All communications, both on editorial and pub lishing business, must be addressed henceforward o the undersigned. Those relating to the settle ment of the past debts due the work will be still addressed to Mr. H. G. Langley, 8 Astor House, the past arrangements with whom, as publisher, have reached their termination L. O’Sullivan, July, 1845. 136 Nassau street, New York. LAST LIKENESS OF GENERAL JACKSON. The admirable Daguerreotype of General Jack son, taken t>y Anthony, Edwards & Co., a few weeks before, his death, has been purchased for the ubc of the Democratic Review. It is in the hands of the artist, and will be engraved in the finest style of mezzotint, of extra size. It is a most beautiful and interesting work, declared by Mr. Van Huron and others to give a more perfect idea of the good ami great old man than any other likeness ; and ought to be possessed and framed by every friend who loves or reveres his memory. Those who sub scribe early will receive it as one of the regular se ries of Portraits. TO THE DEMOCRATIC PRESS. Our friends of the Democratic Press are requested to interest themselves in aiding to carry the work safely ami successfully through the crisis of this great reduction of price. April 11 TI1K CONSTITUTION.—a political, Liter ary, and Commercial Newspaper, published in the City of Baltimore. The Constitution, which was established and heretofore published by the subscribers in the City of Washington, will, on and after Monday, the 1st day of December next, be removed to and published in the City of Balti more. The Constitution is devoted to the support of the principles of that instrument from which it borrows the name, and opposes whatever is not sanctioned by it. It considers a National Bank—a Protec tive Tariff— Internal Improvements by the General Go vernment— Distribution of the proceeds of the sales of the Public Lands—Assumption of the debts of the States—Abrogation of the Executive Veto— as unconstitutional and inexpedient. On the great and vital question in all Governments—Taxation— it will advocate as heretofore the imposition of du ties for revenue alone—opposing a tariff for pro tection as unjust, oppressive, and unconstitutional. We hope to make the paper woithy of the con fidence and snpport of the Democratic party of Ma ryland and of the country. It shall be the faithful expositor of their principles, and the ever ready medium to convey their sentiments and wishes to the public. The Democratic cause is the cause of truth and justice. It courts the tight. It shuns no investigation. And we are determined to see whether a paper, conducted with a devotion to the ,-principle*, rather than to the mrn, of our party—to •further the great cause of human progress, rather than the mere advancement of particular individu als—will not commend ilself to the confidence and favor of the people. It is known that, in our political principles, we are entirely and thoroughly Democratic. Of this, we trust that we have already afforded sufficient evidence; and that we have also given some ear nest of the temper and spirit with which we sustain our principles and opinions. Believing that the present Administration will faithfully carry out the principles and the policy of the Democratic party, we shall continue most cor dially and earnestly to support all its measures •.ending to this end. Its action in regard to Tex as, Oregon, the Tariff, and the Independent Trcas iry, so far as they hare been developed, has been in accordance with the policy of the party that placed them in power; and we have not a doubt, that all vill be satisfied that every thing has been done that ‘•ould be done, to insure successful results to these great measures. The daily paper will b<* published at the very low ate of six dollars a year, payable in advance, or 'wo cents a number ; the weekly at two dollars a ear, payable invariably in advance.
