CORRESPONDENCE—MARKETS. &c. New Yoke, July 13, 5 P, M. The Flour market continues heavy to-day, and no alteration in prices since our last. Corn is firm, and sound is scarce, we note sales of 12000 bushels of Western at 46 a48 cents. In Southern we hear of no sales. Pork continues firm,000 bbls. of prime sold to day at $8, and 400 bbls. of mess at $9.50, which is an advance on our last quotations. „ PASSENGERS BY RAILROADS. Some judgment may be formed of the number of strangers in the pity (says the Baton Travel Irrs) during the 4th. by the following estimates from the principal railroads; The Boston and Worcester road brought into the city between Thursday night and Saturday night, 6000 sengers; Saturday night, after the firework*. a single train wns_ run over this road, of 63 cars, carving about 2500 persons, the largest train that was o’er run on the road. The Providence road brought into the city on Friday and Saturday 4(300 passengers, and a single train, on Saturday ing, carried out 2000 pnssrngers. Over 8000 per sons came into the city over the Eastern railroad on Friday and Saturday. Boston and tMaine rail road had on the 4th about 5U00 passengers ; car ried out on Saturday night between 2000 and 3000 in two trains of 27 and 24 cars each. Bos ton and Fitchburg railroad ran 38 trains during tbe day, up and down. Passengers, carried do* ring the day and evening, a trout 6000; carried up at night, in 62 cars, drawn by three engines. A younger sister, who had for some lime attended the picture room, attached to the Hospital, on Spruce street, after returning from the funeral, was so completely overwhelmed with grief, that her reason was dethroned in about forty 'eight hours, and she took the place of her deceased sis ter in the insane ward. Yesterday morning she expired. She has a widowed mother, and an only surviving sister, ot fragile constitution, to both of whom, it is feared, this heart-rending blow wiil be fatal. JOSEPHINE CLIFTON. Miss Josephine Clifton is now a bride. She w«s4ntely married to Mr. Place, the Manager of one of the New Orleans Theatres.—Norfolk Herald. clippings.' Some miscreant went into the “Telegraph,” newspaper office in New York, last Saturday night, and destroyed all the type, and every thing else he could. The man that would be guilty of Bitch an act, would commit arson or murder. Henry C. Marx, one of the “ upper ten thou sand.” shot a man, named Crusick, in the hack, in New York last week, and was held to hail in ^3000 for his appearance to he tried for the act. The Red River (La.) Republican, of the 28tl. ult., eays:—“ We have heard of a most shock ing occurrence in the Anna Coco settlement, in this parish, a few days since. Two children, a boy and a girl, aged, it is said, 8 and 10 years, with axes or hatchets, killed a younger brother and 6isler. Their mother, it is said, went from homo and left the younger children in charge of the older ones, when the latter determined to kill them, in order, says the report, that they might be rid of the trouble of minding them. North Carolina.— We continue to receive the most cheering and gratifying accounts fioio the Old North Slate, in relation to the prospects of Mr. Shepard, the Democratic candidate for Governor.—JY. V. JYcws. Several of the more Northern journals, even the National Intelligencer, confound Monterey in New l.eon with Monterey on the Pacific, the capital of California. They are more than four degrees apart.—JY. O. Della. |(|The first Lieutenant of one of the Indiana vol unteer companies was recently thrown out of a carriage at New Albany, Ind., and killed. His name not given. On the 5th inst.,two volunteers at Albany. la., were fighting, when a lieutenant attempted to part them. He was instantly stabbed and killed. One Thaddeous E. Parsons, a young lawyer of East Hampton Mass., has bpen arrested for blow ing up a school house with powder—assisted by one Day, in the night time. The Ohi<» Statesman announces that Governor Shannon has removed to Cincinnati, where he has opened a law office. Yankee Hill is in Washington, endeavoring to banish the ennui produced hy hot weather, by his humorous delineations of the peculiarities of the down-eaters. The State Society of the Cincinnati of South Carolina have elected James Hamilton President, and Isaac Motte Campbell, Vice President, for the ensuing year. A Good Toast.—Thp following is one of the regular toast at the 4th of July celebration at Boston : “ The Ladies—the Aristocrats of the Repub lie—they are unwilling that any man should he free, and they won’t believe that all men ate equal.” A Captain in the Navy, who has cruised three years in the Pacific, states, that in Monterey a piece of fresh beef can be exposed to thw sun for thirty six hours without the least taint—the air is so pure. The oldest person wo have any record of who died in this country, was Betsey Trantham. who died in Tennessee, in 1834, at the advanced age of 154 years. A negress died in Pennsylvania, 1808, aged 150. A iStt.ENT \\ ife.—-Madame Rejrnier, was once reprimanded by her husband in company. She was too loquacious, and he checked her hy saying, “ Silencn, Madame, you are a fool.” She lived' nearly thirty years afterwards, but never uttered one word, even to her children. STILL ANOTHER TRIUMPH OVER DISEASE IN MAINE ! Warren, Lincoln County, July 15, 1845. Dear Sir: I take pleasure in complying with your request to bear testimony in favor of your valuable medicine, having had a daughter, 15 years old, very dangerously sick the last year, re stored with it.
