HQMR. Make horns *Ht*evive.. Study to please and interest your wives and your children. Carry to them some natural curiosity, some agreeable hook some useful paper that will interest them for an hour or two every day. It is painful sight to wit ness droves of youths, from tl\e ages of fourteen to twenty one, standing at the corners of the streets on a pleasant evening, using language, to say the least, unbecoming to their age, when they might he agreeably employed at home, parents do not feel sufficiently interested to make their children happy and love the domestic hearth bet ter than the public highways. You will always notice that those young men become lip- best members of Society, and are the most useful in the world, who have spent a largo portion of their minority beneath the care and influence of a de voted parent’s eye. They are preserved from a thousand temptations, to which others are exposed and early Irarn to practice those virtues which in after life make them respected and beloved. Make home attractive. Ha cheerful, kind, and agreeable yourselves. Never wear a frowning brow nr utter a cross or angry word before your children. A dull face—a crabbed expression_a peevish, fretful disposition, are entirely out of place amid the sanctities of home—around the domestic fireside—in the presence of the happy looks and smiling cheeks of innocent childhood, or more sober youth. Some men have a smile for every place but home. They are mild and gentle every where but among their own household.— 'i i.is is a great error—we must fa 11 it a heinemts sin. If there is a spot under Heaven that should call out the best affections, the warmest love*, and the kindest smile, it is in that dear ark, our home. It parents were more particular to do theirduty. in th# respect, it would have a glorious influence, and tell nobly on the future character of the rising generation. ** SOCIETY OF WOMEN. No society is more profitable, because nonp more refining and provocative of virtue, than that of a refined and sensible woman. God enshrined peculiar goodness in the form that her beauty might w in, her gentle voice invite, and the desire ot Iter favor persuade men’s sterner souls to leave the paths ol sinful strife for the ways of pleasant ness and peace. But when woman falls from her blest eminence, and rational enjoyments, into ‘he vain coquette, and flattered idolater of idle fashion, she is unworthy of an honorable man’s Jove, or a sensible man’s admiration. Beauty is then at he6t -“ A pretty play thing-, Dear deceit.” We honor the cheerful deference which is paid, in our land, to the women. It proves that our men know how to respect virtue and affection, and that our women are worthy of such respect. Yet women should be something more than mere wo men to win us to their society. To he the com panions, they should be fitted to be our friends ; to rule our hearts, they should hr- deserving tlie approbation of our niiud9. There are many such, and that they are not more is rather the fault of our sex than their own. and despite all the un manly scandals that have been thrown upon them in prose or verse, they would rather share in the rational conversation of men of sense, than listen ‘o silly compliments of fords; and a man dishonors !hem as well as disgraces himself, w hen he seeks ‘heir circle f.ir idle pastime, and nut for the im provement of his mind.
