The great popularity of Sarsaparilla, and its es tablished efficacy, render it superfluous to enter in to any encomium of its virtues, or adduce any evi dence in its favor. It is true, that it has been here tofore subject to frequent changes of reputation, owing to ignorance of the pioper mode of extract ing iis virtues, or to the inferior quality of the root used. Hence also the inefficacy of many prepara tions of it offered to (he public. The proprietor of this Syrup can assert with confidence, that it is pre pared from the best materials, with the srreateat pharmaceutical care and accuracy, and in the best inode to obtain the active principle in the most concentrated state, answering the desideratum ol exhibiting a large quantity of Sarsaparilla in a small dose. Awaie that the Mctropolia in the great battle ground upon which the heat of the fight ia to be sustained, it is to this important point they ate di recting their most strenuous exertions. They h.n « called to the Whig Mr. Richard H. Toler, a gen tleman or acknowledged abilities anu great expe rience ; Messrs. Guluiher & Kahlwin have been placed at the head of the to called Republican ; ami the Compiler has been greatly strengthened by the acquisition of Mr. W. C. Carrington, who to Ihe accomplishments of a ripe scholar, adds the force ol a vigorous intellect. To this array of hirers we have only to oppose a single Metropolitan Journal, which, however. greal its ability, ought not to be left to cop- single handed with such a host. To ■ .1 ii r .. 0-•-.*'* come therefore to the aid of the Enquirer ami the Democratic partv, il they will accccpt of services so humble, we, Hie’ undersigned, have resolved to establish soother Democratic paper in the city of Richmond. To this design we have been instigated chiefly bv the press ng and frequent solicitations of many o'f the wisest and most influential members of the Den o cralie party, and to its support we invoke the aid <*f our po'itical friends, not i nly in Virginia hut throughout the Union The press is a tower oT strongth, and to the mainl nance of our political principles we should cheerfully contribute our men tal powers and our pecuniary means. In this Journal We. will endeavor, with what ability we may, to sustain the principles and doc trines of the Republican party in their pristine pu rity- 1 ttcrly repudiating all Agrarianism and Radicalism, as destructive of the most va lu.-dil. cini institutions, and worse llum Federalism itself, with which indeed we will not pretend to cumpniu it, we will advocate a limited const run ion of the Constitution of the United States, believing that the plain and obvious meaning of its context, grants full as much power to the General Government, as it is cither wise or politic to bestow upon it. When men are secure in the enjoyment of per sotial liberty and the product of their labor, the ac tive promptings of individual inlerc-t ensure a much better investment of la!>or ami capital, than can be obtained by any system devised for (he pur pose of diverting- it from it- natural into artificial channel.*. e shall, therefore, oppose a Tauifk for protection, not only because it is unconstitu ,tional, but because it is in the highest decree un wise anti impolitic.. Accountability is the great check upon human depravity, anil Cobpohations are corrupt because their members are individually irresponsible; they are, therefore, to be opposed upon general princi ples, and only to be tolerated occasionally as ne cessary evi's. In tlu> Const tution of the United States, we find no war-ant or authority to establish nnv of the<e excrescences upon the hotly politic - and in the shape of a Hank, we hold that the p,,w er would be peculiarly tlaugerous and objection able. * J We shall always oppose the expenditure of vast sums upon local objects, as being not less tin wise, because the fund is always 1 atlly administered wanting the vigilant eye of individu I inteicst and unjust, because it lay* violent hands upon the aennimions of the minority, to he expended m,t for general and necessary purposes, but fo. local and individual emolument. In short, we esteem the Government of the Uni ted State* a c eat arc of the Sovereign Stale* of His Union, instituted for particular purposes, u|,:ch cannot be transcended without the most imminent danger of overthrowing that Union, which it was tlie boast of our ancestors to have erected, and which it should be our pride, as it is our interest, to preserve Although these arc our own particular views, we arc by no means so bigotted, or so illiberal, as to exclude nil othcis from our columns. Our politi < al opponents shall always be welcome, provided their arguments are presented in an nble and re sportful form ; all we ask, is the opportunity of rc ‘uting them. With rig/d on our side, we are pre pared to cucounbr anv comer, r.o matter what weapons lie wields; such is our faith in troth rni hodied, as we believe it to be, in the principles of the Republican Party. Although the political will be the chief, H will not be the only feature of the paper. To the coun try paper an Agricultural department will be add ed, which it is hoped the experience of one of the Editors, in that particular line, will enable him to make particularly acceptable to the farming com munity. This department will he handrotm ly il I list rated with cuto of agricultural implement*, when they can he procured, and it is believed it will constitute a very valuable and popular feature in the paper; at least, no exertion on our part-hall be wanting to make it so. Mechanics nn.l Manu facturer* shall also receive their full share of alien turn; and wc have engaged the sorvircs of one of the first merchants in this city to take charge of the Commercial Department. Able and trust-wor thy correspondents will also be procured to keep n* constantly advised of the most important news in .the principal cities of the Union. Nor will the claims of polite Litbratuse obbs unheeded. We arc not unmindful ot the variety of tastes fur which wc shall have to cater in this de partment ; but wc hope by a duo admixture of po etry and romance, of anecdote, humor and fun. to provide for all, whilst wc will endeavor to shock the sensii ililics ol none. At least, wc will promise to our readers a n,ore intellectual banquet than is afforded by the *• boarding school Mias” order of literature, which graces, or disgraces rather, so many of the public journals of America. Wo are well aware of the risk, the labor, and the responsibility of such an undertaking, and we have encountered them all, after calm and serious deliberation; relying for success upon our deter mination to labor diligently in the prosecution of our design. The absolute dependence of one and all of us upon the prosperity of the paper, is (he best guarantee for the performance of this resolu Of our own ability for this ardur uir task, it would not b come us to speak. One of us has had >ome five or six years experience in the editorial depart ment, an.I another n, by profession and practice thorouirl'ly acquaint d with the mechanical duties of an office. We have been promised the aid of some of the ablest pens in the Union, and we start with the hope of seeing the HOUTHERN STAND ARB, for such is the name of our paper, take its stand hy the side of the first journals of the day — Wc shall l-rgu, with a sheet, the. size of which will be commensurate with our means. Wc know that more paper ran be b .tight for less money; but we have not yet learned to measure menial prodne lions by the yard, nor to .•« imate the value of • bought r>y the extent of the medium through which it is conveyed. TERMS: Our motto is, “Olieip f..r Cash.” The Daii v paper will be published and mailed for tux dollar* per annum,— the Scmi-IVrrK'.v for /'our, and the W f.bklv, for hno The paper can only be procured by transmitting the money in idvance; and in no fate will this im portent rule be departed front. But any one who wishes to take the papr r for a period Ic*j or greater than a year, can forward us any amount of money, not less titan a dollar, and we will fnrni h him with •he, daily, the semi-weekly or the weekly, as be •nay designate, to the value of it. at the rates afore Our friends * ho arc sufficiently interested in the success of the paper to encounter the trouble w ill please collect ami forward to ns immediately ’ The first number of the piper will be issued as »oon as we can get our office arranged, say „n or about the first of September next.
