THE BERTIE & MAUD'S TRIP.
The barge Daisy that was sunk by
collision with an abutment of the Nor?
folk and Western railway bridge, while
being towed through the bridge on Fri?
day last, has been raised by the pro?
prietors of the tug Gen. Mott, of Bal
timoe. Her load of .1,000 oak ties was
Intact. A coffer dam was built around
a hntchway and the barge pumped out
by the Mott and towed to Baltimore by
the tug Alert, starting last night.
AT WORK ON THE NE USE.
It will be remembered that the Nor?
folk nnd Southern steamer Nettse went
aground near Sans Souci Cnshie river,
N. C. during the late West Indian hur?
ricane, and it was feared she would
prove a total lors. Since that time ef?
forts, have been under way to release
her. A channel was dredged on one
side of her and an attempt made to
Jack her Into It. This proving unsuc?
cessful a channel was made on the
other side with the Idea of sucking out
the fnud from under her, but the mud
proved po tenacious that dynamite is
now being used to loosen it.
Tho^e at work on her now hope to
get her nut all right, although the ex?
pense will be heavy.
The barge Williamsburg (new) has
arrived nt Norfolk from New York for
her machinery. She will take that of the
former steamer Olive Branch, which
used to run on the James river. This
will be installed by the Southern Iron
Works, after which the barge will bn
ready for business.
The recent passage of the fine four
mnsted schooner Berlle ft Maud. Cap?
tain Levins, through the Dismal Swamp
Canal, Is n feat on which captain nnd
canal owners are pluming themselves,
the schooner being considered the most
dlflleult to handle of nny that passes
the canals In the North Carolina lum?
ber trade. She drew on this pnssage
ei?lit and one-half feet of water and
carried the largest load of lumber she
has ever taken through the canals,
nnd that without touching on the trip.
