IREyiEw of the Markets: and Real Estate Business. REVIEW OF MARKETS FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks, Money, Exchange, Bonds, Grain, Cotton, Provisions, Bto. New York, Dec. 20.?The stock market gave a demonstration of improved tone and voice in the spirit with which it accepted a slump of 13% points in Brooklyn Rapid Transit, accompanied by sympathetic -weakness in other stocks allied to it. It cannot be said that this violent decline was viewed with v Indifference, for It effectually checked the advancing- tendency in the general market and worked reaction extending to over two points In a num? ber of standard railroad stocks and from 4 to 7 points In some of the In? dustrials! Thanks to the earlier rise In the market, however, and tjie rally fol? lowing the slump, net losses are in nearly all cases small and some sub? stantial net gains are shown by Im? portant stocks. The break in Brooklyn Rapid Transit was attributed to the forced liquidation of a very large in? side account, concerning which many exaggerated/ rumors of Monday were reviewed In full force and exaggerated by the 'bears with a view to breaking the market: During the time to-day when Brook? lyn Rapid Transit was showing most acute, weakness, the rate for call money wns quoted at 4 per cent, and was In plentiful supply on satisfactory col'at eial,. The rate at no time rose above 9 per cent., and In the late dealings fell to'2 per cent, on yesterday's low level. During the day an engagement of gold for shipment to London was an? nounced, and'rumors were current of further heavy engagements to go out Saturday. The announcement and the prospect seemed to have no eff.ect on the local money market. The anomaly of a 2 per cent, money rate and gol:l be? ing allowed to go out while stocks are forced to liquidation at heavy sacrifices, warrants no other conclusion than that the secutlty offered for leans to carry slocks In some instances is unsatisfac? tory. Such is known to be the case. Yesterday's measures of protection and relief were still in force to-day, but It was made manifest that enre and dis? crimination arc exercised In applying the resources contributed. There was liquidation yet to be accomplished to? day, and It pursued Its cours?, but was not allowed to unsetle and demoralize the whola market as was the case Mon? day. The tone of the market during the early hours was nearly normal, ex? cept that trading was very nctlvo and fluctuations rather wide. Prices had advanced and received an additional Impulse upward with the announce? ment of the Increase In New York | Scntral's dividend rate, that stock ris? ing to 130%. The bond market was rather active! and showed late reactions from the eerly strength, making the tone Irregu- j lar. Total sales, par value, $3,li>0,000. IT. New York, Dec 20.?To-day's market for cotton, while irregular, was practi? cally normal, except for a few belated selling orders from remote points and the liquidation of unmargined local In? terests with one interval of decided weakness in the afternoon,, when the market broke 10 points on Wall street rumors. Liverpool followed up her bul? lish leadership of yesterday with a burdening and more nctlve market for spot cotton, and a gain of 2%?3-64d. in futures. This show of foreign firmness made the opening of our market steady at an advance of 5 points. Good foreign buying was a feature, but n demand from shorts was the best support the market had. At the strongest .interval prices showed n net rise of 8@10 points. The ndvance was cheeked by selling for the account of scattered holders, who wished to reduce their holdings In an? ticipation of the holldnys. The volume of transactions, olthough considerably smaller than yesterday's total, repre? sented nn active market. Hut for the afternoon brenk the genernl course ot the market wr.-s strongly upward with the close feverish ut an advance of 2@5 points. New York! Dec 20.?Cotton futures opened steady.
