UNITED STATES TOWING AND TRANSPORTATION COMPANY MAKE STATEMENT. The following letter Is'self explana? tory and will bo read with interest: EdlWy of Vlrglnlan-rilot:. Dear Sir?Your very kind notice of our Arm and of the prospectus for the United States Towing and Transporta? tion Company In your paper?'for which we are obliged?is, unintentionally cal? culated to give u wrong impression which may affect tho enterprise. The organization of this towing and transportation company, with the op? tions which we hold for the shipment of coal to Cuba and Porto Rico, may be the first stop towards a regular steamship line between this port and Cuba and Porto Rico, but it is not the intention of the company which wo arc about to raise to establish a steam? ship line at present. TO do this pro? perly would take at least five hundred thousand dollars, and we" would be un? willing to undertake the enterprise unless Congress passes the contemplat? ed United States shipping bill, and the Legislature of Virginia would give us the same protection.which is given to the lines out of Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Bnlllmore under Ihe revenue InSvs of their respective Stntcs. nor could wo expect to raise such n company within the next tctt days. What we propose is the charier and probable nurchuse of steamers and barges upon which wc have options, and to taito advantage of options for high freights which we hold, and also employing the services in the most re? munerative .business offering us. In the last ten years the conntwlse and inland freights <>n Pacnhohtns coal, which h:is been shipped through ihls office, have nm?unted to mure than ten millions of dollars, while not one thousandth part of "the same has been paid to any one In Norfolk. It is to give our home peop'o an op? portunity to join in this undertaking, with a view to future enlargement. If deemed expedient, that we have ad? vertised proposals to receive bids until the ist of January. One linn In New York have offered to secure the whole amount If necessary. Yours truly, WILD!AM LAMB & . CO. It is understood that for this pre? liminary organization but $100,000 is needed. and that It will be several years at hast before the company will enlarge to the amount which the wider scheme would call for. and it is not certain this would ever be done, as the letter shows. VIRGINIA BEACH. PRINCESS ANNE OOTWTY AU? THORITIES G 11 ANT NO RELIEF. 'Pbe committee representing the- Vir? ginia Bencli property owners in the mittler of securing some action of the Princess Anne county authorities to? ward improving Virginia Beach, have laid the matter before the Board of Supervisors of that county. They asked the board to put aside a part of the toad and county taxes paid by the Vir- ' glnla Beach people, to be used for thej desired Improvements ut Ihe Bedch, stich as board walks, bulkheads. e:o. The Supervisors, while of the opinion thai the request was n reasonable one, said they would be unable to act In the mittler, as the people of Princess; Anne county were pretty generally opposed to spending county funds for improve? ments at the Beach; The property owners will probably ask the Legislature at this session to grant them a charter providing for a tux assessor and a local board of im? provement, which will have the power to expend the funds collected. The Princess Anne citizens may opoose this. The committee thai called upon the Supervisors was composed of Messrs. A. B. Seldner, chairman; Allan Q. Bur? row. A. Tl. Martin, James E. Allen and Robert E. De.Tarriette.
