CHRISTMAS GREETINGS.
EXTENDED TO THE PRESIDENT
BY CONGRESSMEN.
(By Telegraph to Vlrginlan-Pilot.)
?Washington, D. C? Dec. 21.?Many
Senators and Representatives called
upon the President to-day to pay their
respects and extend their Christmas
greetings before leaving for their homes
to spend the holiday season. Amohg
the was Representative Richardson,
the Democratic leader of the House,
and Representative Stalllngs, of Ala?
bama. The President Is very cordial In
Response to these evidences of good
will. He appears to he enjoying ex?
ceptionally good health.
No extensive preparations are being
made for the Christmag celebrotion nt
the Executive Mansion this year, ow?
ing to the state of Mrs. McKinley's
health, und the day probably will be a
very quiet one. Miss Grace McKinley
nnd Miss Sarah Duncan, nieces of the
President, will he guests at the White
House during the holidays. Abner Mc?
Kinley and his wife will be there also.
Many boxes have already reached the
White House containing gifts for the
President and Mrs.-McKinley, and a
considerable number of presents nre til
ready on the way to'their destination
from the White House.
Mrs. McKinley's gifts are exquisite
products of her own handiwork. Last
year Mia. McKtnWy went to New York
before the holidays and purchased
many little things for the servants and
White House attaches, but this year
her Illness pi evented her from mahing
the trip.
England Seizes Amorloan Flour.
(By telegraph to Vlrglnlan-Pilot.)
Washington, Dec. 21.?In the absence
of a formal complaint, the State De?
partment officials do not care to express
a flpeclnc opinion In the case of the re
ported seizures of American flour by
British cruisers off the South African
const, under suspicion that It was in?
tended for the Transvaal. But under
the general rule adopted by our Gov?
ernment, and adhered to by most of the
other civilized governments," merchan?
dise of this description sent by one neu?
tral nation to another, as In the case,
of the United States and Portugal, is
absolutely exempt from seizure.
