Review of the Markets; and Real Estate Business. REVIEW OF MARKETS FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks, Money, Exchange, Bonds, Grain, Cotion, Provisions, Etc. Xev York, Jan. 31.?To-day's slock nmrkot showed the stimulating effect of yesterday's" sharp advances and In iireascd activity In a largely augmented outside demand. The commission houses showed more buying orders lo execute this morning than lor many weeks past, and their brokers made a lively opening on the floor of the Hoard room. The great activity of the mar? ket and the steadiness of prices during the lirst hour made It obvious that .'?pec? ulators who had bought stocks yester? day were feeding the new demand with n judicious liberality, so as to realize profits on yesterday's rise, and yet not d'stuvb the new level of values. The steady and confident absorption of these offerings proved highly satisfac? tory to the professional bulls, and be-, lore the end of the first hour they c an- 1 inenced to hid up prices again/and to : take on new lines of stock. The niaiket was a good deal unsettled by a sudden break of four points in Sugar, and Hie announcement of the ; failure of an important Slock Exchange house The closing out of the accounts of this house under the rule of the ex . hungu caused a pause iu the specula? tive activity, though the shares were weil abs u b. d and prices well sustnin <:.l. 'Mm l est prices of the day in the majori.y of stocks were made after this | < ptsotlo. the demand from tin: short iu- j tercst becoming eager and pressing for :- me of the stocks which have been tar- ' gels recently fur the bear operations. | Tin- frightened shorts were eager to j rover, and It cannot be said that the bull contingent retained the same pin? ed confidence during the taller part <if the dny. They were disposed to avail themselves of the forced demand from (ha shorts to realize, and prices yielded quite materially during the last hour. The mixed sentiments thus manifest? ed were partly due to the fuels dls- | closed by the day's Incidents that an j Important part of yesterday's large buying was duo to the reckless and In? temperate attempt to recoup bear losses l.y plunging into a long a count. It whs evident Ihat Operators short of the general market had maelo a prodigal i utlay in Sugar, which relapsed weakly In face of an effort to realize prolits. There was very heavy covering In evl deh e at various paints In the list, the Industtlnl stocks, recently under pres? sure, being most conspicuously affected. The very heavy dealings In U. It. T.. and a part of the demand for Steel and Wire, were attributed io this cause. There was a very largo demand, how? ever, for Steel und Wire for the long iiocnunt. The sympathetic effect on ?ither metal stocks was less marked than yesterday. The aggressive strength seemed lo Impress foreign markets, and invited some small buying eli mand from London. Conspicuous strength was displayed by the Grangers, the C tilers und some of Hie Southwestern, but the gains In lhe railroad slocks were; much affected by the late realising, and wer-- nearly ail reduced to fractional limits, after having extended well above a point. Third Avenue and Pittsbnrg, ?.'. C. and St. Louis continue.1 heavy, In face of the general tendency of the market. The money market continued very easy, wl bout reltcclhig In any degree the enlarged stock a llvlty, and Ster? ling exchange was distinctly reaction? ary. Bonds wore active, but yielded all some points. Total sal-, s, par value, $2 350.000. IT. S. coupon dcclln d and the old ?l's ',4 In the bid price.
