Meeting of tho City Democratic Kxccutlvo Committee to Be Held To-Morrow Nlglt and Candidates ATill Also Meet ttnd Se? lect the Kleutorul Board, The candidates to 'be voted for at the Democratic primary on the 17th and 19th instants paid up their assessments yesterday and the list was closed. The full $1,700 assessed against the several offices to be filled was collected by Treasurer Oberndorfer. Some of the candidates wanted to pay their assessments Friday, claiming that was the legal day, according to the primary law, which says the lists shall close ten days before the pri? mary election. THE CANDIDATES. The entries for the various offices are as follows: Mayor?C. Brooks Johnston*, Dr. James G. Rlddlek. Clerk of Courts?W. T. Anderson, L. Itoyster*, James V. Trehy. City Sergeant?W. F. Allen, John W. Cherry, J. F. Lawler*. R. 9. Weaver. Commissioner of Revenue?W. P. Dodson, W. W. Dey*. City Treasurer?H. F. Herman*, W. T. Cooke. City Collector?W. L?. Baker, James F. Reid*. Coke, C. C. Fan tone. Clerk of Circuit Court?Lawrence Waring. ? Mr. James F. Barkley, Mho had an? nounced himself a candidate for City Sergeant, withdrew yesterday. CANDIDATES TO MEET. The City Democratic Executive Com? mittee will meet Monday night with the candidates, when the above list will be declared official, and the nffalrs of the primary will then be turned over to the candidates. It is probable that the candidates will at this meeting select an Electoral Board for the government of the primary. Of the forty-one can? didates it will require the votes of twenty-eight (two thirds) to select the members of the Electoral Board, and the same number to ratify the selection of Judges and clerks of the primary by the hoard. FOR THE COUNCILS. The City Executive Committee at it's meeting Monday night will probably take up the matter of holding ward primaries for the selection of a Council men ticket, hut tile Impression pre? vails that this primary will not he or? dered until after the general primary has heen held. Several members of the committee, who have talked them? selves to the Virginian-Pilot, have said that a night primary would have to he held for the Councils, as this was the only legalized method of holding ward primaries. ?Present Incumbent. 'MASS IY1EETIMC. THE SEASIDE UNTON OF EP WORTH LEAGUES. The first quarterly meeting of the Seaside Union _of-Kpworth Leagues of Norfolk, Portsmouth and Berkley will convene at Central Church, Ports? mouth, Tuesday next, (he 10th instant, at S o'clock. The attendance will doubtless be large, as there Is at pres? ent fourteen leagues comprising the Union, embracing Cumberland Street, Epworth, Centenary, Queen Street, Trinity, McKendree, Hu'ntersyllle and LeKies Memorial, of Norfolk, and Cen? tral, Monumental, Park View, Wright Memorial and Owens Memorial, Ports? mouth, and Chestnut Street Church, Berkley. Each league will be represented by Its president, who will define the work and condition of his particular league. The most interesting feature of the occasion 'will be the address of Rev. A. Coke Smith. D. D., of Epworth Church, this city. The program com? plete will be of a high order. The music will be furnished by the talented choir of Ccntrnl Church. It Is the earnest desire of the Sea? side Union Council that every member of each league be in attendance. Old Point Uofeatcrt by n Score or SO to 3 Noi folk Team's Strong Duttlng, Snappy (uUeld XVork und Clover Oiitfleltlhig Wins Busy Victory Rune ball Notes. The Old Pointers came over after the scalp of the Norfolk "Phenoms" yester? day, but the only adornment'they flut? tered in the breezes of Hampton Roads on their return trip was heavy crepe. The soldier-citizen boya of Manager Camp's team, strong amateurs for the most part, were easy for the Norfolk players, who developed scarcely a weak point In yesterday's game. The score was 20 to 3. It was the rooters' first opportunity to yell for the "Phenoms," and the players gave them cause to be proud of them. Norfolk had three pitchers In the box? Brooks, Tlerney and Bass? and their work, which was *Wattthed closely, was strong, and responsible largely for Old Point's small score. The Infield work of the team was snap? py and vigorous. Jim Smith, at short stop, made several pretty stops that kept the Old Pointers out of bases that looked easy for them. Spruit's work at second base was everything expected of him from his brilliant record last season, and Armstrong and Sullivan also did good playing. The outfield of Norfolk was well cared for by "Phenom" Smith, McClOUd and Pulslfer, though the Old Pointers gave them but little bard work to do. "Phenom" Smith made two brilliant catches in the right field, which sus? tained his reputation in that line, and also did what was expected of him at the bat when he made a two and a three bagger. Pulslfer duplicated Smith's work at the but, his three-base hit utterly demoralizing the Old Point? ers for a short time. Two home runs were made on this hit. Sullivan, the third baseman of Nor? folk's team, sent the ball far into the left field in the eighth Inning, and made the only home run of the game, causing the rooters to go wild. The Old Point team made two of Its three rdns in tho first inning, and In this inning managed to shut off Nor? folk on the third base. The score standing 2 to 0 at the end of the first inning, caused the rooters to guy the Norfolk players for letting amateurs walk over them. There was some rather shaky playing by the Norfolk team In this Inning. Armstrong, at first base, muffed a ball and failed to j stop Powell, the lanky batter of the Old Pointers', whose hitting was one of the game's feature.--. In second inning, however. Arm? strong, as well as the other Norfolk I players who hadn't been al th-ir best apparently In the first, redeemed them? selves, and didn't gel shaky again dur? ing tho rest of the gnme. Old Point's star player, at least In yesterday's game, was Powell, the right (leider, iii^s batting and base running did more than anything- else to keep up the spirit of his team. Cunningham was in the box for Old Point during the llr.st four Innings, i Fuller pitched tor the balance <>r the' game, and his quick work, occasionally sending.a curve, kept the Norfolk bat? ters guessing til first, but they were soon unto him. There?wnn no ofllclnl scorer of the game, and the base hits, errors; * etc., were not recorded. Matthews, one of the Norfolk .play? ers, umpired with perfect sntlsfastlori to both teams. NOTE'S. The familiar face of Mr. W. Harry Norris wus seen in the box office yes? terday, and "Billy" Simmons was at the gate. There were about six hundred fans in attendance at yesterday's game, and they showed no lack of enthusiasm. Several ladles witnessed the game. Manager Smith, of the Norfolk team, has arranged a game with the Soldiers' Home team, to be played at Hampton next Saturday. The Old Point boys are desirous of meeting the "Phenoms" again, and have Invited them over to play in the Fortress Monroe grounds some after? noon next week. The challenge will probably be accepted. Tho game between Princeton nnd Norfolk Is not a certainty yet, but Manager Smith is working for it. Tho Princeton team has b?;-n asked to come here next Friday and play Norfolk. The game between the Boston Nation? al League team and Ynle College will doubtless draw a big crowd to the Nor? folk grounds next Saturday. Mr. John T. Brady, the Portsmouth magnate, was among those who wit? nessed yesterday's game. INDOOR BASEBALL. Two picked teams from the Senior Gymnasium Class of the Y. M. C. A. played an interesting game of Indoor baseball in the gymnasium last night. The second team under Captain B, H. Miller was defeated by Captain M. Lankford's team by a score of 23 to 16. First team batteries?Miller, Priest and Dodson. Second team batteries? Odend'hal and Bpps. Tho features of tho game were the two home runs by Montague with the bases full nnd the pitching of Epps, who struck out eight men. Prof. Ward referred the game, which was the first of the season.
