A. held day sports, about Which so much has been said, will take place this afternoon at Baseball Park. The people of Portsmouth will have an opportunity to see how careful the young men have trained In nthletic ."ports. The boys arc in line trim, and will give a good account of themselves. The handicapping of Mayo will be the main feature. He will have to gain on the other men three yards in the fifty-yard dash, five yards in the 100 yard dash, and ten yards in the 150 yard dash. This will be the feature of the day. The twelve-pound shot put. high and broad jump will also be very interesting. To give you a good, hearty laugh, there will be a has race and three-leg? ged race. Hundley, died at e:-10 o'clock yesterday morning at the family residence, le'j'.i Glasgow street, aged 8 years and 27 days. A gentleman named Joseph Smalley, who Is employed at the Portsmouth Electroplating Works, hnd a narrow escape Thursday from death. While nt work he was taken ,-ick and fell against one of the machines and bruised himself quite badly. He re? mained in an unconscious state for some time before he was found. Dr. Bindcwnld was summoned and work? ed on hlin sometime before lie restored him to consciousness. Mr. Smalley is subject to spells of fainting. PREPARATIONS FOR FOOTBALL. Members of the Portsmouth football team are considering the advisability of getting together sometime shortly and re-prganlz'.ng for the fall cam? paign. In ttegard to the poisoning of dogs In the naval hospital grounds, com? plaint of which has been made to the .Secretary of tlhie Navy, Dr. N. II. Fere bee, medical director of the hospital, yesterday stated that there had never been any intention on the part of the hospital authorities to poison dogs, and such eases as have occurred were acci? dental. Dr. Fereboe said that iwison was placed about the sea walls of the hospital for rats, which abound there 1 In such numbers as to impair the strength of tho wad] by undermining, and possibly dog-s may have eatten 1t. If such was the case. Dr. Ferebee said he regretted It. He further staibed that If proof could be furnished him that dogs had been knowingly poisoned within the hospital grounds, he would hell? prosecute the offenders.
