THE BONONZA OF THE FDT?RI Tile Reaourccfl of 3Io?t Other .Ser ious Have been Developed? But Hnvh in not llio Cn.se Here? T?e t'ruwt l>nly Una Been Broken. Chauncey M. Depew seeuis to have reached the core of the situation, and staicd it so positively that it nee Is no effort to comprehend it. The natural resources of the North, East and We; t have been drawn upon until they no v yield no attractive values. The day of big things has passed. It is to tl e South, kept back by circumstance which could not be well avoided, tin t the capital and energy of the country are looking. It is here when ai cumulations of years in the enter? prises of the North and West, mutt lind prohtable employment. And no1 where under the sun are opportuni? ties more inviting. While Mr. Depe v does not specially mention V'irglni t in bis reference to the South, it is be? cause he has never traversed the State and investigated her resources. Of all the States in the Onion the is the richest in material resource'. Not even Pennsylvania, in her virgin days, could surpass her in mineral;:, in limbers, in clays, and agricultural possibilities. We venture nothing in saying that the iron o o resource s < f this State are uncqualedintbe Union, and yet we have comparatively no industries to represent them. It s only in recent days that capital and skilled knowledge have been attracted to these conditions. And the .note investigation is made the more wonder that such marvelous wealth has to long lain dormant. Our day has com \ and Mr. Depew presents the futi.re ut Virginia in the language he applies 10 the South, while at the same time the whole Southland heaves and throbs under new impulses and new inspira? tions. There is nothing, nor has there ever been anything, in the Ea>t or West to compare with the natural r : sources the South is unfolding and which are magnetizing tli? minds and muscles of the country. We are ju*t entering upon the infancy of our de? velopment?just breaking the cru t which conceals the wealth that nature has so lavishly bestowed, and which must command the capital and (nte ? prise to convert into the uses of civi? lization. Mr. Depew sees all this, and as much as says so in the following sentences: "The net result of this visit to tl e South to my mind, is just this?tin t the South is the bonanza of the fu? ture. We have developed all tLe great and sudden opportunities f< r wealth,or most of them,in our North? western States and on the Picil c slope. Put here is a vast country with the best climate in the world, wit 1 conditions of health which are ibso lutely unparalled, with vast ft res s untouched, with enormous veins <>f coal and iron, which yet have m t known anything beyond their origi? nal conditions ; with soil that, i nd< r proper cultivation, for little capital, can support a tremendous population; with conditions in the atmosphere for comfortable living winter and summer which exists nowhere e;se in the country; and that is to be the at? traction for the young men who go out from the farms to seek se - tlement, and not by immigration from abroad?for I do not think tin y will go that way?but by the int.'rn. I immigration from onr own couu ry t is to become in time as prosperous ?? s any other section of the country an 1 as prosperous by a purely America a development." Others see it as does Mr. Depew, an 1 we know it, especially as it relates to Virginia. We are indeed entering upon a new era. We are ste{ ping upon the threshold of a new inateri; 1 birth, and our growth and progress can only be measured by the effo. t that is put forth. The South, wita old Virginia in the van, is coming, and coming to stay, to contribute he r wonderful resources to the prozreis and grandeur of the nation.?Valley Virginian. In Holland, Mich., C. J. A Beautiful pihI <'oiivo?j1cii( Location tor Buildings No city in the South lias grown .vita greater rapidity than has lloanoke, and probably not one is on a firme ? foundation considering its age Roanoke swells and grows each day, and unlike most cities, does not grow i:i any one direction more than an o; her. but is being rapidly built up on ever side, north, eact, south and west. The influx of population since 186? has been enormous, and hundreds oi buildings have gone up to supply the demand. There has been no lull hi the erection of houses this winter, ex? cept that occasioned by the rain, ami drive in what direction, you will hea" the sound of the hammer and evi? dences of building meet your eye. Hundreds who rented houses a few years ago pay taxes now, owning their dwellings, and theerection ol res? idences is the best index to the growth of the city and the strongest assur ance that the city is here to stay The homes that have been huftl here within the past year are, many of them, as handsome, artistic ano expensive as can be found anywhere To accommodate the ever increasing population, numerous additions have oeen laid off and the lots placed on the market. Among the many valu? able properties hereabouts, none of fer greater inducements as a place o. residence than thoJGlade addition. This property is situated just east of Glade creek and is traversed by tht Vintou extension of the Roai okt street railway, which places it in di J rect communication with the cer tra j portion of the city, a person can live in that section, and if hi3 place o; business is in the upper ;iarf of the city, or even in the West End, he can take the street cai and be ready for the day's work at the usual time. Every benefit of a suburban residence is obtained, with out any of its discomforts. The property is well drained and ' therefore healthy. It lias been di ' vided into lots by the laying off of wide streets and avenues. The view to be obtained from Glade addition is beautiful. On the east, toweling hundreds of feet in the air, are the Blue Ridge mountains, while on the south the Roanoke river -winds itself like a silver thread among the hills, forming one of the most beautiful bits of scenery anywhere in Southwest Virginia. One of the principal feat? ures about the Glade property is the easy terms upon which the lots can be gotten. The prices have been placed so low that it is within the power of every man to own his home. Messrs. j William M.
