DO TOC ADVERTISE ?
?'To discontinue an advertisement.'
says John Wanamaker, "is like taking
down your sign. If you want to do
business you must let the public know
it. I would as soon think of doing
business withont clerks as without,
advertising."
TWO TOC?H MM.
Muldoox and Kilrain were both
in town for a short time yesterday.
They were on their way to Lynchburg
iran* an axhibRioa was to be givea.
A conple of weeks ago Sullivan
stopped here on his way to Mississippi
to stand trial. At that timo in an ia
tarview with a Times reporter he ex?
pressed tha greatest enmity towards
Muldook and that gentleman does uo;
seem to hare any love for the geutle
man from Ireland.
Men who knew Muldoox and Scl
mvax are looking forward to their ucr.
meeting with anticipations hardly
second to thoso with which they wait'j?:
fer Sullivan's great ring battles.
Thty know that should the champion
fighter and his former trainer meet in
a barroom, which is most likely, thai
chaneea are quite as much in favor of
Muldoon getting the best of the en?
counter which would probably ensue,
as they are m favor of the big bruisjr
knocking out his stalwart and active
ex-friend. Said one of the few men ic
New York, who is the peer of eiths'
of them as a wrestler : "I don't want
to be brought into this thing, I have
my own affairs to attend to.
but if a rough-and-tumble barrooir
fight comes when Sullivan and Mcl
doon meet the wrestler will maka
sad sight of the bruiser. Of course, i'
Sullivan can keepMuLDoox alarm's
length and gets a chance to hainnn:
him with bis fists he will do him up
easily. But Muldoon is the bettr.
wrestler, and, I believe, the bettjr
rough-and-tumble fighter of the two
He and Sullivan have often wrestled
when he was training Sullivan. At
a rough-and-tumble you'll see Mul
DOON the beat man.'"
THE HOHE OF COOPER.
Otsego Hall, the home of Jam::.
Fenimore Cooper, the novelist, at
Cooperstown, was destroyed by fire in
1853, two years after his death. The
family built another building on a nev
site. In the course of time a nev.
street was laid out by the village au?
thorities, which included within it;
bounds the spot where the old hall
once stood. There is no suitable mon 1 ?
ment to Cooper in the town which he
made famous. A movement is ou to3
to erect one by public subscription
Meantime, and as a temporary memo?
rial, the Trustees of the village La ?
caused a huge- boulder to be planted on
the site of the hall on Fair street, an;
have surrounded it by au iron leu ;<
and have had cut upon a polished face
of tha stone an inscription which reads
as follows :
"On this site stood Otsego Hall, the
home of James Fenimore Coopex.
where ha lived from 1834 to the day of
his death, September, 1351. Built it.
1798 by Judge William Cooper; de?
stroyed by fire October, 1853."
SUED fix? A FIRE.
That Roanoke is in need of a fire
alarm system no one will venture tc
doubt.
The moat important time is that
whan tha flames first burst forth. Thee
they are comparatively easy to mauago.
but after they get a place it is hard to
subdue them.
The increase, spread and their
tongues lick up property worth hun?
dreds, yes thousands oi dollars in a fe s
moments. If the engines were on
hand this would not be.
Enough is sometimes lost at one the
to pay for the system, and the Council
(should see to it that the city is supplied
with a fire alarm.
