Trada in genoral has suffered heavily
in Roanoko during tho recent blizzard
and tho deep lay of snow following.
WednOBday, tho day following tho fear?
ful night whon tho anow so jilenlly fell,
making no noi3o, giving no intimation
of tho torriblo work, it wai to dc^tfic
next in crushing tho roof* ovor tho
heads of tho unsuspecting; Wednesday
trade was practically susponded.
On tho morning of that day men and
horses had to wado through thirty
inches of it, if thoy mado any progress
at all, and after a few attempts the
horses gavo it up, and tho men almost
did so.
Not a woman discharged her pocket
hooka that day ovor tho counters of tho
merchants and very few tho day follow?
ing, and at this season of tho year tho
women's trado is immense. Mon are
grumbling all over Hoanoke about tho
long pulls thoir wives and daughters
aro making upon thoir pocket books for
Christinas money, and all this goes for
holiday pr taellttt.
i Tho gr. o ?ry n or '.hanU Buffered heav?
ily In the II rat pari, of the snow. It was
iinpossib! i to fill what orders they re?
ceived, as they could not run thoir
delivery wa runs.
Some of tho merchants delivered
frotaU from horseback, and otlu rs had
improvishcd sleds running, with a
horse in front and a negro inside, which
suggested thoughts of Diogenes aud his
tub. However, things improved for tho
groccrymon the latter park of tho wmdc,
although toe trado has not entirely ro
uovered it ( old impetuu.
Tho wholesale grocery men say that
their trade has fallen oil within tho last,
few weeks, but tho loss Is not attributed
to the snow so muco as to Christmas
timer,. While Christmas brings trado to
?omo, it diminishes thoir's, they say.
ThOV too, are suffering from tho trouble
of obtaining toam$ and having hauling
done.
Tho boot and shoo trade, oh Tun
Timks has before mention1 d. ha9 had
tho biggest trade of the year. All of
the stores of this braneh of business did
a brisk trado.
One firm maintained that they sold
more rubb >r boots and shoos during tho
?now than they had in the past two
years and a hall previous. Another
enterprising firm sold out on tho worst
?lay of tho snow, and telegraphed for
more, which they received in the even?
ing of the Batuc day.
The clothing men suffered heavily
during tbo week. Their trado fell off
largi ly and has not yet recovered from
iu depression.
Tho drug mon say that their groatost
loss is in tho falling off of the ladies'
trado in the holiday goods line, All tbo
drujf stores handle a largo stock of holi?
day goods, and tbo women buy lots of
them. Tbo general drug and prescrip?
tion bnsinous continues as heretofore.
The jewelry mon suffered heavily also
from the loss of female trade, but that
also is now "picking up," and tho re?
porter saw tho jewelry establishments
full of ladies last night.
Tho book stores, who also handle
many nlght-boforo-Chrlstiuas-hoRQ-fill
ing-goods, bad plenty of time to fold
their bands during the snow, but during
the latter part of tho wook they havo
unfolded thorn and aro wrapping up lots
of bundles.
Tho financial situation continues to
improve and money to got easier. Busi?
ness men aro mooting thoir paper
promptly.

Express Companies

Tho Southern and Adams Express
Companies, whose combined offices at
115 Jefferson street aro managed by
Councilman R. A. Buckner, aro just now j Stewart A Co.'s
submerged beneath a flood of holiday ]
business, and tho inrush of tho early i
days next week will necessitate a
further increase of force and increased
energy on the part of tho overworked
ones now on duty.
Two extra clerks and an additional
wagon aro now engaged in tho ofiico and
in delivering and receiving packages.
Everything is on the rush, and yet tho
volume of business can scarcely ho
bandied.
It speaks well for tho excoution of
those companies that all day Wednes?
day, throughout tho storm and over and
through tho banks of snow, at least one
wagon was engaged in receiving and
delivering orders. It was the only
business wagon abroad during the day,
and many and favorable were the com?
ments upon it.
Agent Buckner yesterday told a Timks
reporter that tho business of tho com?
panies had assumed huge proportions,
and was double as great as it. was this
I time last year, which fact is a clear in?
dication of tho growth and prosperity
of Roanoke.
"It is bard," he said, "to keep pace
with tho business of the ollloe, and it is
harder to anticipate the amount to ba
done a week ahead."
At present the incoming and outgoing
business is about equally divided as to
weight, but tho outgoing parcels are
more numerous than tho other class.
The disproportion will doubtless bo
much greater next weed; because of the

MINERAL LAND.
1 offer for sale 201 acres of Coal and
Iron Land, situated in tho Catawba val?
ley of Virginia, eleven miles from Roan?
oke. The outlook for great develop?
ments on this property is splendid. The
ore is a vein of soft brown hematite 32
feet, wide and assaying 50 percent, me?
tallic iron. And the coal prospects are
fine?two shafts having been sunk, one
2o and the oilier 25 feet, through solid
coal slate. The property also contains
a mineral spring, which the analysis of
Lehmann ?.V Mager proved to possess re?
markable curative powers for all kidney
troubles, especially for diabetes. The
enormous quantity of coal and ore that
will bo required toi the large number of
flirnftCea and other industrial plants in
course of construct.on in Southwest Vir?
ginia will greatly increase the already
large demand for these minerals, and
consequently enhance the value of such
property. Two railroads have been sur
veyed near the property, one of which
the Roanoke and Craig railroad, and the
other, the Virginia Western railroad,
will afford valuable connections. Fuller
