IN TRAINING FOR THE CONTEST. Griffin and Layton Both Confi ' dent of Victory. Hoyv the Men Spend Tbolr Ways Prepar? ing their Muscles f?r the Fight? In? teresting lltisobiiii Games of tho Na? tional League?Association Games? Tho Events of tho Turf?General ami Local Spoi liNews. As tho timo approaches for tho boxing contest botweon W. S. [.ayton and Frank Gritlln tho interest in the exhibition in? creases. Hut men aro in activo train? ing, and though neither one is prone to boast of Iiis ability, it is evident that both men arc determined to do their level best, and each seems confident of victory. A Tim ks reporter visited both wen at their quarters yesterday. Griflln and his trainer, Carter Lyons, arc? domiciled nt tho Hotel Brunswick, in Salom. Griflln is doing some hard, earnest work, und be certainly looked to be in the pink of condition when the reporter saw him. His day's work begins at half-past 0 in tho morning, when ho arises. Ho swallows a raw egg and some sherry and then starts out for a brisk walk, return? ing at 8 o'clock, win n ho is rubbed down and sponged otf witli salt water, after a little exercise with tho gloves, A hearty breakfast, of chops, eggs and weak tea is then eaten. Ho then in? dulges in a few games of pool until about 10 o'clock. From that hour until dinner time he swings clubs, exercises with dumb bells and puts on the gloves for a bout with his trainer. After a substantial dinner ho amuses himself reading the daily papers and playing pool until about -1 o'clock. Ho then goes down to tho river where ho Strips, puts on a pair of tights, where ho exercises by running, jumping and wrcstding with Lyons. After a good rub down and a plungo in the river ho re? turns to the hotel. Supper Is then taten and he retires at half past nine. Griflln, personally, is very quiet and unassuming. He is anxious for the con? tent and fsays that if Layton wins it will be because he is tho better man. Ho weighs now 117 pounds. The reporter found Layton at his quarters in Marshall's, but ho was hardly recognizable, as ho had shaved off his moustache. This. Layton says, is assure sign of victory. Layton is a perfect specimen of physical hardiness, and when ho says he's in tho fight to stay, it is easy to telleve. His muscles are"like iron and his general health is excellent. Every morning at 7 o'clock ho is out of hod, swinging clubs or punching a Rumsey's air hag until 7:30. At 8 o'clock ho has breakfast, which con? sists of oatmeal, a couple of soft-boiled eggs and rare steak. After breakfast he dons his sweaters and walks O" runs to tho top of Mill Mountain, which trip occupies about an hour and a quarter. He is then rubbed down, takes a sponge bath and another rubbing and then takes a walk on tho streets. After dinner ho takes another stroll, and a short, brisk walk in tho afternoon. From 5 to Op. in. ho punches tao heavy bag. He is once more rubbed down and takes another plunge, after which he has supper. About 10 o'clock he retires. Layton abstains from all in? toxicating liquor and does not use to? bacco in any form. His room at Marshall's looks like a miniature gymnasium. H- re he does all his liirht work, but the heavy punch? ing bag is at the Oak Hall Clothing House. When he commenced to train he weighed 100 pounds, but weighs but 151 now,and this is the weight at which he expects to enter the ring Murphy, the local boxer, is his trainer and he is a good one, too. Layton received a letter yesterday .from Jack Howling, the champion featherweight, dated at Norfolk, in? forming him that ho (Layton) had been matched to fight an unknown at that l/lacj. Howling, in his letter, requests that he, bo allowed to train Layton. No details wero Riven in tho communica? tion. It is stated that Hilly Nally, a Wash? ington man, will challenge the winne r of the coming contest. Nally has quite a reputation in Washington as a clever I oxo ?. _ GKIFFIN AND lyons will SPAR ? And Itouuoke Bantams Have a Slx-I(ounil ? Contest. The boxing entertainment to be held at the Opera Hou-iO in Sulcm on Tues? day night will be a very interesting one. A large number of people in both Roan? oke and Salem have expressed a desire to seo Grillin spar, and as this will bo tho only chance ho will Uavc before his contest with Layton he will give a four round exhibition with Carter Lyon?, bis trainer, both men appearing in full ring costume. ? Thebontams of Roanoke, Ed. Oppen? heim and Doug Smith, will base a six round bout. Although Smith has tho advantage in weight by tit least IIfteen pounds, Oppcnhcltn's friends are very sanguine that Ed. will be in it at the finish. Ed. McAloer, the Roanoke hoy who has done such clever work in tho past, will bo matched against an unknown of Salem. In addition to this, exhibitions will bo given by some of Salom's sparrers, who will bo produced by Fred Weber. All those desiring to attend from Roa? noke can go to Salem on tho 7 o'clock dummy or 7:5.r> train, returning on the "train leaving Salem at 10:75 p. in. Tim Keefo is of the opinion that all pitchers aro loss effective than hereto? fore, as the batters bavo gradually boon learning jlio twirlers' secrets. Ho be? lieves that bitting and run-getting will bo unusually heavy this year. Old Man Anson is again in form, and his colts aro beginning to recover thoir lost ground. Peto Browning was fined $50 by Mana? ger Hanlon for playing without spikes in one of tho Boston games. Hoy, tho deaf and dumb center fielder of the St Louis, is bitting the ball hard and Holding brilliantly this season. When the Pittsburgs were paid off for last month Browning found a shortage of 82!, Baldwin S50 and Miller S25, all fines. Of course they kicked, but they went just the samo. Arthur Whitney has tho best record of any third basoman in tho country. The Bristol Gun Club is preparing to bavo a big tournament tho latter part of .luly. Tho teams at Roanoke, Ash ville, Staunton, Lynchburg and other neighboring cities bavo been invited to participate. Tho Alerts crossed bats with the Union Stars yesterday afternoon, the score standing 23 to 12 favor of the lat? ter. The batteries wero Weedon and Monvhan; Daniel and Ribblo.
