Groves of Callforuh*. ?They oro not muc.li to look at, but they do their work In good style." Alexander Crow, entoaiologlst of tho state board of horticulture, was looking very closely and with evident satisfac? tion at what appeared to the naked cyo as iniuutc specks of d__x on a piece of glass as bo made the remark, and passed the glass to u San Francisco Examiner reporter. ?'What is it?" "Let me put this slide under tho mi? croscope and then see. for yourself." Under the glass tho tiny speck, hardly visible to the naked eye, became a well developed fly, alx>ut as large as a horse? fly, with two pairs of wings, three pairs of legs and a pair of antenna*. Tho wings were covered with long, bristly hairs, and the legs terminated each with a pair of plncer-liko claws. If small, It was evident that the little fel? low was nmply prepared to do battle for life, "It's a fly, sore, but what is it good for?" "Next to the vedolia, it is, perhaps, the most valuable insect known in Cali? fornia," continued Mr. Crow. "This little fly, for which we have yet no name, but which belongs to the Chaleid family, is the natural foe of what is known as the yellow or San Gabriel t scale. Euch female will lay probably | from fifty to one hundred eggs, and those eggs develop larva; that food upon j the scale insect. The female is fur? nished with a sharp stingvrlikc ovipos tcr. This she thrusts under a scale in- ! sect, und deposits an egg, which hatches Into a voracious little grub that, as soon as hatched, proceeds to consume its adopted parent. Under the skin of the scale insect it passes through its meta? morphoses, when it eats its way out a ; fully developed lly, prepared to lay eggs for another generation of yellow scale eaters." "It is such a lit'Je specie flow did you ever discover it?'' "Tho orange orchards in San Gabriel valley were badly covered with the yel? low scale. The foliugu was sparse and the fruit almost valueless. Re fore the fruit could be marketed the growers had to put it in long water troughs and scrub tho scale oil with brooms, and j then it was not clean. So destructive was the pest, in fact, that many orchard- | ists talked of giving up the business, j Mr. Coggswcll at Sierra Madre had an orchard Hint was badly infested, and I after awhile it began to improve until i the trees became clean and the fruit ex? cellent. Other orchards in the vicinity showed signs of improvement, and I I began to look for the cause, when close | observation showed U?s little fellow at 1 work. Prof. Coquiletto hud also discov? ered it and a study of its habits has shown it to be tho natural remedy, and I believe the only- remedy, for tho de? structive yellow scale. ? "WlnV continued Mr. Crow, becom? ing enthusiastic, "Jdiat minute speck is worth untold millions to this state." _____-__? ROMANCE IN COURT. Story uf u Man Who Won In a Lottery twit Lost u ISrlde. A romantic story was revealed in ti Boston court the other day in a contest over the 9300,000 estate of the late Sam? uel Welch, who lived in so many places that the probate judge doesn't know where to locate his legal residence. For years a fine-looking brick house on Elm street, SomervUlc, has remained unten antud, its windows and doors heavily barred against entrance by anyone ex? cept the possessor of the key. All sorts of ghost stories have been conjured up about this house, and everybody who , lived in the ivdjhV>rho<;-.l was con- j vlneedthot tins house was haunted. It had t!.;:t reputation, anyway, and timid women and children always went a block out of their way to avoid passing it at night. The ghost stories vanished in the light of to-day's revelations. That house was built by .Mr. Welch years ago with the proceeds of a. lottery prize which he had drawn. Ho was engaged to be married to an estimable young woman, and the wedding day had been appointed. When the intended bride heard that the foundation of bis wealth had l)ecn laid through a lottery invest? ment she refused to marry him. Mr. Welch immediately barred up tho house, which hud just been completed, and would never give his consent to its be? ing occupied. He then led a roving lifo in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, where he passed the greater part of his time. Mayor Pope, of Soiocrvillc, was to-day appointed administrator of the estate, which he will distribute among a large number of heirs. THE RUSTLING SKIRT. An Agrrrahlti Bound Which Accompanies < in- Fashionable Woman. A couple of elderly men were engaged in conversation in front of a leading hotel the other day, says a Philadelphia pa[kt, when a fashionably dressed woman, who, from the several small articles in her hands, evidently had been shopping, approached. Suddenly stop? ping In the midst of his talk, the taller of the two men bent bis head down as if to catch some sound. "What's tho matter?" quickly inquired his com? panion. "Arc you sick?" "No. Sid listen." As the laxly swept pnet a soft, low, rustling sound was heard, like the crush? ing of soft silk in one's band. It was a pleasing sound. "Wonder where that noise comes from," curiously inquired the short man, hardly before tlio fair shopper had passed out of earshot, "Why," explained his friend, "it came from that lady's skirt. It is woman's latest fad?a rustling skirt. This sound is produced by a strip of some bort of silk importation, and is put on the lower edge of tho underskirt. When tl?e feet touch it tho noise is pro? duced. It is a European wrinkle. I was across the water with my wife last sum? mer, and that's how I got to know about it. In J'aris und London it's all tho craze. Why, often over thcro I would watch women walk on> quiet spots by tho hour to hear that colt, low, b?ken sound* TAKE A I WITH YOU "You press the button, wo do tho rest." (Or you can do it yourself.)
