Another phenomenon has appear? ed in good old "Jeems City." I it was a well that miraculously ap? peared on a farm bordering the old stage road. Probably that was caused by the San Francisco up? heaval. Scientists. 50 far as we know, have not attempted an expla? nation. Now the wells In James City, or at least some, according to report, have been strangelv affected re ly. The water in some of the deep? est wells, which has never Deer known to vary, dropped from four to seven feet all within a day or two at widely separated points. The public well at Toano dropped seven feet, the one at Lightfoot four or five feet, and others are noticed to have become shallow, notably the one at Croaker. This is probably due to the ex? ceptionally dry warier, but as it was noticed about me time of tne great Italian earthquake some would connect the phenomenon with that catastrophe.
