Times Mailbag mm M 8301' Dear editor: Your editoriel entitled, "How Can The Japanese Support Pestivali" which appeared in the June at edi tion of the Northwest Times has been called to our attention. Ines muoh as this article took I public “pot shot” et en ectivity promoted in the generel interest we feel that your readers are entitled to e pu blic reply. ‘ It m regrettable that your newspaper would devote specs to‘ an editorial which, at best, oen‘ serve no useful purpose. end which.‘ at worst. oen only make a thank less Job more difficult for the pace pie who ,have spent, and will spend, a great many hours—without eny personal re-imhursemeut—tryinc to make the Peeiivel a sum. ‘ This negative approach lauds us} to believe that in cataloging the un desirehie featuru of our district you emitted a very important one.‘ Ifweerewnieleeneccnoiuicand social asset of ourselves. it appears that we must‘ eke reckon with a destructive and e fatalistic press. Itseddensusiobeforeedtothis conclusion beceuee, frankly. wehed expected better things of you. We also resent. gs unjust and un— fair. your statement; thet the Ja panese community could not con ceivably be interested in support ing anything from which they would not receive direct financial benefits. We know. from e look at the re cord and from personal experience, that the Japanese people in Seattle constitute one of the most gener ous and unselfish groups in the ci ty, and we feel they deserve recogni tion for it. We would be the last to deny that there are things about the district that are not as they should be. We deplore the unsightly conditions of some streets. the humdrum appear ance of our buildings, the scarcity of unusual and distinctive restau rants, the feet thet there is no place in this district to buy Japenese cu rios and objects d‘ert. But—we are trying to do‘some thing constructive. We are trying to provide an incentive to create the‘ “clean. safe look. and heelthy.‘ wholesome atmosphere" you meno‘ tion. The Northwest Times could be e’ potent factor in chenging the things none of us like. We would like to seeitbe thestenderdheerer ins positive. dyn‘einic campaign foi’the correction of any of the things we've mentioned. Pick any one of them. go all for it. and the community will. back you to the limit! . Sincerely. ‘ International Festival Planning \ Committee ‘ ‘ Alexander Bishop. sen. Beth Mellon. Wendell Che-en. We also pointed out: “I! the Japanese merchants are reluctant and shy about mone tary support towards the festival, IT Is NOT THAT THEY DO Ndr WISH 'lO MAT! in an area matter but rather that they cannot mad it." It is amusing, to say the least. that the committee accuses us or m a "pot M" at the festival when in one nicely discussirx the m at the Japanese to support the m financially. m committee. it saddens us. has inflated, and we have come to the conoliision that it (the eonunittee) is a rotten shot. ' And please don't hand us the line about “we also resent. as unjust and unioir. your statements that the Japanese community ‘eouid not conceivably be mm in sup porting anything from which they would not receive direct financial ‘hene‘fits". Don't senile up our edlorial and put words to suit your tam. The “we resent" is way of! its mark: it is common knowledge that the Japanese have always done more than their share‘in communi ty-wide fund-raising campaigns. 'me committee claims that the editorial "at best, can serve no use ful purpose". and . . . “at worst. can only make a thankless Job more diii’icult for the people Who have spent. and will spend, a great many hours—without any personal re-im bursement—trying to moire the he tivai a success". That is a lot of biarney. _. In the first place, the editorial, at best. to borrow their words. served this useful purpose: the editorial aroused the committee into declar ing that it is “trying to do some thing constructive, We are trying to provide an incentive to create the 'clean. safe look. and healthy. wholesome atmosphere’ you men tion". And the editorial also coaxed the committee into depicting "the unsightly conditions of some streets. the humdrum appearance of our buildings. the scarcity of unusual and distinctive restaurants, the fact that there is no place in this dis trict to buy Japanese curios and objects d'art”. The committee mus es another point here: We suggest ed clearing the area or "all its uni desirable elements. is made inviting enough to outsiders without fear of one sort or another. and is relieved of peliceiflen (bless them!) “mung in pairs to trial: every suspicious character". Remember? And we don’t especially mean any special group either. { in the second place. the editorial.‘ at worst, to ‘borrow their wards stain. should spur the committee workers on to greater heights. They should not take pity upon them selves hy crying that it is a thank less job because they have spent and will be spending "‘a great many hours trying to make the festival a success". wen ship that phrase “without any personal re-ixnhurse ment"; it might be embarrassing to some. We’ll ignore that idle but cute re mu'k about reckoning with rules tructive ma 3 fat-limo puns. . . we had expected better thirm of you". But we’d my in» we more profoundw diuppolntod that the committee. consisting of {man per sons. couldn't write a unsible letter; frankly, we Mao Md expected better things of you (:11 “than. It'.
