CROSSING THE CASCADES power to the whole of the state of \ Washington. Harnessing the Power. The proposition of harnessing the power in the river has been under ; contemplation by the railroad com-! pany for several years, and many pre liminary surveys have been made with the expectancy that the work of securing electrical energy would soon be completed. But it was not until about a year ago that permanent sur veys were made, and the project started towards its completion. To secure a sufficient fall a dpm ,is being constructed about five nii'rs | above Leavenworth, which will cost j about $100,000 when It is completed. lln order to place the dam in the I river securely, the surging channel I was changed so that afl the water flowed on the north side of the river until the dam could be constructed OB the south side. This side is now completed, being constructed of concrete and placed in j so as to resist the great pressure of 1 high water in the summer time, and the current of the river is now changed over so that the dam can be j completed on the north side. An intake starts at the dam and j leads into a flume which will carry j j the water 2 Vz down the river to the power plant. This flume is to be con j structed of wooden stave pipe, B*A I feet in diameter, and at the lower end will connect to a huge steel pipe of I the same diameter, which will carry; the water across the big steel bridge now built across the river a short dis- j | tance above the power house. In . building the flume down the river it ; | was found necessary to tunnel ( through rock a distance of SOO feet, | ; which work is now nearly completed, i and a gang of men will begin to lay be installed for the work. When completed the work will cost gpprex imatelv $1,000,000 and will be one |of the firs' of its kind in the west.] about 8,000 horsepower being gener ated. [ One hundred and fifty-ton engines will be used on the road for the pur pose of hauling the loads, with the transmission power running overhead j on trolleys. One substation will • probably be located at the tunnel and j one at Skykomish. IN THE SUPERIOR COURT. New Eases. Water Rent Due. (Continued irom Page One.) STATE ENTOMOLO -! GIST HERE (Continued from Page One.) , spray into the. tree will not fill the lower calyx cup, and that is the only part of the tree that needs tlie spray. If your trees are taller than you can reach with the rod, build a tower platform from which to spray. Get above the branches and spray down. To reach the bottom of the calyx cup, much pressure is absolutely nec essary. Do not spray at less than }>0 pounds, and if possible use 150 to 200 pounds. Stay with a tree until the bottom of every blossom is filled, even though it may seem a great Waste of time and material. Select I a blossom here and there and cut it | in two, to see if your spraying has filled the cup beneath the stamens. | If it has not, your spraying is not j thorough, and you should spray again j infmediately. Watch that you do not | miss the ends of the branches. Most worms enter the apple through the bottom of the calyx cup When this is poisoned there can then ! be no late worms, for the early worms are the parents of the later ones. Just how carefully or how carelessly you do the first spraying will determine the number of wormy apples you will harvest. Later spray ings are unsatisfactory. They are hard to time correctly, a id they save little fruit." One-third off on Wall Paper at M. O Merrill's. 105 v. Mi?, ion st*** - Notice lo Voters.
