Thompson. 5-1 PLANETS BEYOND NEPTUNE Calculations Prove Their Existence Millions of Miles from the Sun. The announcement made last i month by M. Gaillot of the existence of two hitherto unknown planets promises to rank in importance with the discovery of Neptune in 1846 by Leverrier. M. Gaillot was formerly assistant director of the Paris Ob servatory, and he made known his deductions at a "meeting of the Acad emy of Sciences. Long and intricate calculations indicate that these plan ets exist in space beyond Neptune, some millions of miles from the sun. Observations previously made by M. Law, of Copenhagen, and Prof. Pick ering, of Harvard University, are con firmed by M. Gaillot. M. Gaillot followed the methods of Leverrier, who, noting and study ing the causes of the disturbances in i the transit of Uranus, concluded they were due to the existence of another J planet. Some months later the as-J tronomer Gaile. of Berlin, definitely 1 found the planet Neptune, where it j had been indicated by his French Confrere. 1° the same way disturb- i ances in Uranus and Neptune have given M. Kaillet the basis for his in-' vestigations and deductions. He says one of the two planets should be in the region occupied by the con stellation Gemini, gravitating at a distance from the sun of 45 times the distance from the earth to the sun, the unit of distance used in as tronomy, or about 6 milliards 840 millions kilometers. The other planet, he announces, is still farther away, some 10 milliards 32 millions kilometers from the sun. and in the region of the constellation Sagittarius. However, M. Gaillot explains that these results cannot yet be taken as definite, his observations being based only on the disturbances of Uranus, those of Neptune not having develop ed sufficiently up to* the present to enable perfect observations to be made. While the new planets may be reported from one of the world's j observatories at any moment, he con isiders it more probable that they wili (not be clearly visible ugitil 1912, ; when they will be in those parts of , their orbits nearest to the earth.
