Death of Red Cloud.
Red Cloud, the last of the great
Sioux chiefs, died at the home of his
son on Pine Ridge agency Friday. He
was about 85 years of age. He was
an uncivilized Indian and while even
tually whipped to a standstill bore a
grudge against the white man until
the last because of the wrongs com
mitted against his people. He was
especially troublesome in the late
sixties, when in his prime, and vig
orously opposed the construction of
the Union Pacific over its present
rout*- through Nebraska and Colora
do. When he could not induce the
government to change the route and
spare his people's game territory he
said. "I'll strew it with dead soldiers
from beginning to end,' - and he came
pretty near doing it. Kimball
