C, Aug. 5. —The Sado Maru from oriental ports, brings de tails not cabled concerning the fight ing between Portuguese and Chinese near Macao during the week begin ning July 13. The movement against the pirates grew out of the capture from set tlements in the Portuguese zone of a number of Chinese children by the pirates, who demanded large ran soms and threatened to kill the cap tives unless payment was made. A hand cut from one of the children was sent to enforce the demands and the parents of the kidnapped chil dren appealed to the governor of Macao for help. The Portuguese dispatched a fleet against the pirates who thereupon seized Colowan. PRE COOLING IS HIT IN CHICAGO Pre-cooled Georgia peaches have attracted much attention in Chicago this season because of their fine qual ity and splendid preservation. With the natural heat of the fruit removed before it is packed this class of goods will bring 25 cents or more per crate than the regular Georgia stock. The success of the pre-cooling for these long shipments is a splendid argu ment in favor of the system. Demand Falls Off. The demand has not been quite as good during the past few days as heretofore. The fact that consider able stock has conje in a trifle over ripe has had its effect, and then, too, the dealers say that everyone has been eating peaches until they are tired of them. Good, hard shipping stock has been selling well, but the local demand is not satisfactory. Di rect shipments to cities around Chi cago have been suspended, and these cities are turning to the larger center for their supply. With this influence the market has been a trifle firmer of late. Bayers Pay More. The Texas peaches are cleaning up and buyers in the country are being forced to pay more for their stock. The poor fruit is disposed of large ly to peddlers, as the lower pirce of the specked and small fruit appeals to them and they can dispose of it much more easily than the regular dealer. It is estimated here that between 300 and 400 carloads of peaches at Atlanta, Georgia, valued at from $100,000 to $150,000, have been ruined during the height of the sea son just closed on account of the lack of transportation facilities of the railroads to handle the crops.
