City Purchases
Street Flusher
Tho city has recently purchased
of the Good Roads Machinery Co., the
sanitary street flushing machine
which lias been used for several
months on the streets on a free trial,
Tho rogular price of the water wa
gon is 5500, but It was purchased by
the city for $425. This deduction
was made because the city paid the
Fairmont Carriage Works $75 for
making some change in the construc
tion which was found to be necessary.
M. E. Trustees
Want Bill Cancelled
Tho trustees of tho M. E. church re
cently appeared before the city board
of affairs and asked for the cancella
tion of a paving bill rendered against
tho ohurch. The hill referred to is
the one rendored for the paving ot
the alley between Third and Fourth
streets and Fairmont and Gaston ave
nues, which runs back of the church
property.

the Baltimore and Ohio railroad con
j structlon work at Doe Gulley, died of
his injuries lutcr in a hospital.
Low Death Rate.
WHEELING?The death rate in
Wheeling has never been so low as
during the present year. Statistics
(or eleven months completed by the
health bureau show but G2S deaths,
while in the same eleven months of a
year ago there were Gil deaths. On
a basis of population of 42,000. the
dosth rate for the eleven months 13
41.95 per thousand against a death
rate of 15.46 for the eleven months of
July 1. 1913, to May 31, 1914, the last
previous published statement of the
health bureau and likewise an eleven
month period.
In the eleven months of this year,
June carried tlio highest number of
deaths, 75, with September next with
72 deaths. May with 3G deaths is the
low month of the year.

Bad Fire.
CLARKSBUI1G?One or tlio pump
houses of the Hope Natural Gas Co.'s
big pumping station at Hastings, on
the Short Line railroad was practi
cally ruined by Are Sunday night. Lo
cal officials of tlio company say that
no estimate of the damage can yet
be made, but it ran up into tbo thou
sands of dollars.
The plant consisted of three largo
buildings and a few small ones. One
is a gasolene plant, another a steam
motive power plant and the third,
which was ruined by lire, was a gas
pumping and gasolene engine plant.
Most of the machinery was damaged
by fire. Of four large gas pumps
one was utterly destroyed/si
badly damaged anil the, ojiifi
