I BITS OF || | STATE NEWS [ Saturday a week ago, at the Pittsburgh quarries near Martinsburg, the men in charge of a battery of blasts were not a little awed at a manifestation of infiniteness in a play of lightning. Quite a battery was to have been fired. Everything was prepared and the next step would have been the man to touch the button tbat would set off the blast. In the meantime the electrical storm had become so Intense that the foreman called the men away from that spot. Whether It was premonition on his part or not it was a fortunltous circumstance for a bolt of lightning set off the battery and a terrific explosion ensued that would have resulted in injury and perhaps the death of some of the workmen. It can now be said, Bays the Martinsburg Journal, that the men are exceedingly careful during a storm. Plans are being made for an official review of the Second West Virginia Regiment of the National Guard at Camp Kanawha by Governor Cornwell and the other members of the state board of public works, including Auditor John S. Darst, Treasurer W. S. Johnaon. Secretary of State Houston Q. Young, Superintendent of Schools M. P. Shawkey, Commissionei of Agriculture James H. Stewart and Attorney General E. T. England. The I OUTBURSTS OF (BY C review will take place a lew days be-1 fore the troops leavo for Hattiesburg, i Miss., probably the latter part of this | week or the first of next, The exact ] date for the review has not been set! of ing to the absence for a day or two1 of one or two members of the state officials. Miss Elizabeth Hoge, of Morgantown, j now has the official knowledge that she is a citijen of West Virginia, in which she Has been a teacher for a number of years. She was given this information in a letter from Attorney General E. T. England, to whom she bad written In regard to the matter. She said her parents have always lived In Pennsylvania, from which state she came to West Virginia first to attend the state university at Morgantown and later to teach in the schools o( that city. She said she supported herself and wanted to know what she must do to become a full-fledged citizen of the state. She was informed that she already is such a citizen of West Virginia. The Kanawha river experienced the largest day in the coal trade yesterday that has occurred for many months, A total of 578,000 bushels of coal went down the river. Dams Nos. 0, 10 and 11 were maneuvered to float out the large amount of coal. Five boats towed the product which was all from Kanawha valley mines. The steamer "D. T. Lane" towed nine barges and one flat; "Plymouth," four barges and four flats; "Cruiser," one flat; "Smith," four barges and three flats; "Admiral Dewey," five barges and one flat; and the "R. P. GUlam, 15 barges and two flats. On account of the water being low, It was necessary to lower the wickets to let the boats out. The vessels all went through without any trouble. It fs an unusual amount of coal to be transported in any one day. It shows the volume of coal business being done In the vicinity, says the Charleston Mail. Palpable Hit. "What was that fellow kicking about?" Inquired the restaurant proprietor. "He complained because I gave htm a soiled bill In his change," said the cashier. "I shut him up, though."
