Before sailing for France the President
left this message.
"Now by God's grace. The Red
Cross Christmas message of 1918 is
to be a message of peace as well as
a message of good will. But peace
does not mean we can fold our hands.
It means further sacrifice. We must
prove conclusionly to an attentive
world that America is permanently
aroused to the needs of a new era,
our old indifference gone forever.
We cannot sit down to a diet of
steak and pan cakes when in Bussia
following the star of Liberty there
are 80,000 Czech refugees. These
destitute patriots, some old men, old
women and children, are without
food, shelter and clothes. We cannot
shout the old "Merry Xmas' to
our own children when in Petrograd
hollew-eyed, desperate mothers "wait
hours in a milk line. Starving motherers
