The perscnal property of Burlington, we un derstand will be listed at about SI. 500,000. Added to the real estate, this wonld give for this city, a grand list of something over 71,000. On this a tax of 80 cents would raise as much as a ttx of 220 cents on the last list. We are informed that the assessors of Burling ton took the precaution before the listers of the ooanty met in Equalising Convention, to ascer tain from examination of records if deeds in the several towns, the prices at which important pieces of lands had been st Id during the past year, so that they might use the same as a test of the accuracy of appraisals. In only one of the towns they visited did they find the appraisal in the clerk's office, and in only one or two bad the appraisal ever been returned to the office. Two or three towns did not even bring the appraisal with them to the convention, so that nothing at all was learned of ibose.exeept from a summary, presented oa a single half sheet. As far as their memoranda could be compared with the apprais als, the following is the result : Jericho. 10 sales for S48..VJO, appraised at 8i:;,I70 -28 percent. Burlington, 30 sales for $174.0"9, appraUed at S171 ,7:1098 per cent. In one town there had been two hotels sold for an aggregate of 518,000, and the same were appraised at $3,440 less than 1-5 their selling value. In another town a $6,100 purchase wss appraised at 800. In another large and wealthy town, one establishment, with twenty acres of land, was appraised at over l-7th the entire grand list of the town. LixoitAE Coiutt Faio This took place at Morrlarille oa Tuesday and Wednesday, and was a highly successful affair. The show of cattle especially was remarkably good, over 2il0 head of fine cattle being on the ground on Tuesday. There was also an excellent displry of horses, and especially of colts, and breeding mares. Oa Wednesday, the discourse was delivered by Pres. B. Fay. Mr. Ltat of Jericho, presented the appraisal of that town as a substitute for the one-third valuation, presented at tbe former meeting. By the present appraisal, farming lands are value! at an average of $47.&. Mr. Halbert of Essex, stated that the theory of tbe listers of Essex was to appraise property at what they thought it would sell for at auction. They designed to get about 1-3 of the vaiae of the property. Their average for farm ing lands, per acre, was $lu-10. Mr. Sanderson of Milton stated that th ir ap praisal was about 60 per cent, of tbe cash value of the rroperty. J. Landon of Hiaesburgh stated that they made their appraisal at what the land would sell for cash down. Of course, not as high as when sold on long time. Their average per acre, for farming lands, was $32..V). Mr. Mason of Bichmond, stated that they in tended to appraise their real estate about 1-. its cash value. Their average per acre, of farming land, was 16.24. Mr. Beach said real estate in Westfbrd was appraise i at about what it would bring for cash, average per acre of farm lands, $30.10. Mr. Mead said they had raised the appraisal of CoderhiU from 15 to 20 per cent, higher than five years ago. They intended to appraise land at 1-3 to 1-2 of its actual eaeh value, verageper acre Ctr farming lands, $9.20. The Convention adjourned to meet at two o'clock p. a. ArrEitvoos. The convention met at 2 o'clock, R. B. Fay iu the chair. Mr. Reed of Shelburn said it was the intention to appraise the property at its cash value. A ravage rate of firm lands per acre. 949.W Mr. Judson of Huntington said they were governed in making their appraisal by the re quirements of the statute. Their average of farming lands per acre was flt?.4u. Mr. bhaw of Bolton said their appraisals were made at about 40 per cent, of the cash valne Mr. Mason would be willing to raise the ap praisals of all towns to a cash value, provided the thing was general through the State. Bat he was of the opinion that a cash valuation vould compel Chittenden County to pay more than its proportion of State taxes. He con sidered the experiment wonld be too expen sive for Chittenden County. He understood that several counties were standing tbe same or even lower than five years ago .Mr. Alger moved that the appraisal of Jericho be taken as a basis. Mr. Maon moved as an amendment, that one third of that appraisal be taken as a basis Tbe vote cn the amendment was ttken by ayes and nays, and resulted as follows : .fyrs Shaw, Weston. Ihere is no argument against appraising property at its full value, if the sane course i aJopted by tbe whole State. On motion of .Mr. Landon tbe Convention ttec adjourned sine die. The various congregations brought their own supplies of substantial and delicacies, and had each a separate town picaic under the common root This was a nioa. pleasant feature of the occasion. At two o'clock, they re-assembled, st.d after rausic and prayer by Rev. J. P. Otis of Browntngton, a memorial address was delivered by President Angel', of the University of Vermont. The celebration clued with prayer by Rev. Daniel Goodhue of Wettfield, end the singing of Old Hundred by choir and congrega tion. It seems to us that this was a right sensible and pleasant way of commemorating the virtues of the Pilgrim Fathers and of keeping their me mory green. And if there wereaoch more pleasant gatherings of churches, by counties or otherwise, it would doubtless be well, for the cause of reli-. gioc and promotion of harmony among Chris t!ans.
