The Tow.v Sisrot of Schools. in intelligent correspondent in Jericho writes rs as follows . A short aooount of the wcrkic; of the new system of schools in Jericho may not be amiss. Jericho adopted the town system cf schools at the annual town meeting, and though then ia come disbatisfaoticn at first, the peo ple cf Jericho, on reflection, have become gen erally satisfied that the town system will be for the bet interests of the schools. The Directors have establislcl, for the present, eleven schools in the town, and have employed a board of first class teachers, six of whom have fittel them selves for teaching at the State Normal School. T'.e schools all commenced the second Monday of May, anl all cf them are now in successful operation. The Dire.-b.rs are confident cf se curing Utter results, for the same money, than aere obtained under the district system. Chitteadca Co. Good Templar's Union. A meeting cf the Good Templars' Union of this county took place at Gcod Templars' Hall in this city on Wednesday afternoon. Eleven lodges were represented by delegates varying in numbers. The attendance waj better than was anticipated. Keports from tbe various lodges show them to be in an ordinarily profperous ccnlition, some remarkably no, while in all a cheerful and hopeful spirit prevails. The eleven, ledges report 1130 members in good standing. Besides transacting the niual business of the meeting, various questions pertaining to the good of the order were discussed by members of the Unien, and by W. II. H. McAllister of the Temptrance .idtocate, and Rev. II. P. Cushing of East Burke, the secretary cf the Grand Lodge of Vermont The next meeting will be held at Hinesburg on the third Wednesdty in August. In the evening, a public meeting was held nt tbe Sine place. The hall was crowded. The choir cf Champlatn Lodge furnished excellent mnsic, and Rev. H. P. Cushing, lion. George W.GranJey, and Dr. Jeweit, deliverel brief addresses, which were listened to with attention and evident satisfaction. City Meeting. The city meeting yesterday was well attended and its results gave general satisfaction. It was called to order by Mjyor Dodge at 10 a. m when the warning was read by City Clerk Itoot, and Judge Parker was elected Moderator. The following report of Hon. L. B. Englesby, a spe cial committee appointed by the City Council, in October last, to Investigate the subject of repair ing or rebuilding the highway bridge at Winoce xi, being called for, was read by the Clerk : To the honorable Board of .Udtrmtn cf the City of Hrligton : The undersigned, to whom was referred the matter of the bridge at Wnoo.ki Falls, so called, with instructions to concur with the town of Colchester in the repair of the same, reports : That after full and careful examination by the authorities of Colchester, as well as myself, we concur in saying that the present bridge is not worth repairing in tbe manner conceded to be necessary (if repaired at all) and cot safe to be left in its present condition for any great length of time. We all concur, therefore, in recom mending the building of a new bridge. Two plans are suggested, one of wood, of which a model is at my offioe, the cost of which made of spruce timber would be $17 per foot and from S8 to lO additional for aide walks ; with pine timber the cost would be as reach more as the cost of the timber, about one-third additional. The other is of iron, for which we have plans and specifications, to be finished above the piers and abutments with side walks of six feet, with two coats of paint, at $42 per foot The length will be 820 feet over all, and the drive-way 24 feet wide. In addition is the stone work, one new abutment entirely and two new piers. The cost of the stone work we cannot ascertain defi nitely without the neceesary specincations.which we have not yet obtained. I deem it proper to say that before the making of this report I bad seen a letter from the selectmen of Wood stock (where an iron bridge 120 feet long was built last j ear by the same parties who have furnished tbe specifications above alluded to, Messrs. Blodgett & Curry of Boston) in which they any it has riven entire satUfaetioi. In did not deem it proper to proceed under your resolution without reporting tbe atwve tacts to you, and would (respectfully suggest that your early attention should be gives to the matter. that tbe work may not be delayed. Mr. Derby, who proposes to build the wooden bridge, also agrees to take the old bridge at its fair value. Respectfully submitted. Levers. it B. Ehoubbt, Committee. After remarks by Messrs. Alger, Erartt, Gates, Roife and Capt. Nabb, the following reso lution, c tiered by Henry Rolfe, Esq., was adopt ed by a vote of yeas 78, nays 22. Rrv,lvc1, That a committee of three be ap pointed to make a thorough investigation of Winooeki Bridge and report at an adjourned meeting. Mayor Dodge, Joseph D. Alien and Elmore Johnson were appointed such committee. On motion of Hon. R. S. Taft tbe meeting ad journed until Monday, Juae 7th. at 10 a. m. We have been shown a specimen of Moulton'e Patent Water Tubing whioh is now attracting so much attention. The piece shown us had been in the ground nine years, laid in a gravelly knoll, and yet is still sounl as a nut, the wood not appearing in the least affected. Tbe makers claim it to be the purest, cheapest and most dur able water conductor known. It is very port able, weighing only ten pounds to the rod, and costs ooly one-half as much as lead pipe, same bore. The wood was formerly painted with ooal tar and wound with iron wire ; it is now boiled in coal tar and wound with copper wire . It is war ranted to stand a pressure of 100 feet, anl not to burst when frozen. One mas can lay 300 rods per day. On the whole it recommends it self to us as the beet article of tubing we have ever examined. It is manufactured at Johnson by Moulton Bros. 4 Co., who are doing a rapid ly Mcressing business. They have received orders from Fairbanks, and an order for a car load from Colorado. About the Miu. The lumber mill of Shep ard. Davia & Co., which has been silent for the past week will be in operation atf sin thia morn ing. The lumber mill of Bloigett & Son has alfo been stopped for a vcelt. Oa Ton ml ay last a dsfcet wm diooorered in one of the boilers im mediately after it was stopped for tbe day. The steam escaped farioasly through a rent, and it was fortunate that the mill stopped at the early snd unusual hour 0! S 0'cloek p m , whereby a serious accident was tmdotitteJiy preTented. It is expected that the mill will be rnnniog again early next reeV. Liasley's lumber mill has also been under goinc Taluable repairs. The main shaft, which was of iron, has been taken out and a ettel one put in its place. This was made necessary by the nich speed and constant strain npon il One would naturally suppose that there could be no very great quantity of lumber remaining in tbe yards at the lake after these three Urge mills end the one in the Pioneer shop hd run five months npon ihem, but there is enough re maining to supply the market with seasoned lumber until new shipments arrive. The lumber as it srrires from Canada is usfit for immediate use and must remain in the yards some consider able time to be seasoned. The mtikct it active and increasing. Time!
