conducted under General Birstaw with an
in-igniGeint amount of error, and with
care for the in tercet-, both of the pensioners
and of tho Government, which is worthy of
the highest prai-o. A an instance of the

last, than was given in our despatchcs.
About 2:30 o'clock a. m. tho fire was dis
covered comiDg out of tho roof of S. A.
Fifo'sstor.', whijh was in process of erec
tion and nrarly completed. Those who
were Crst to arrivo say tbo ll imcs wore thon
confined to tho roof and near tho circs
plates," and that tho fumes of
burning kcroscno were plainly discernible.
The fire was more than they could cope with
and an alarm was sounded. But very littlo
if any wind was blowing at this time, but a
trong cast wind soon s(,t in which carried
the flames to an adjoining tenement bouso,
belonging to E. M. Gilford, and occupied
by Alpheus Nichols and Moses Gray, which
was soon consumed. From theneo the
flames spread to another bouso further
west owned pIso by Mr Gilford and occu
pied by J. J. Rabbin, the postmaster. Ed-
son Pinccy's store, on the opposite side of
tdo road, was tho next to do, and by this
time the win! had changed to an opposite
direction, which carried tho flinie to
Wm. Hamilton's flouring mill, east ol
rife s store, and irom thence to .he saw
mill aJjoining, belonging to A. II. Peck.
Tbo Fairman block is but a few feet oast of
this $aw mill, and this was aved by tho ut
most exertions aided by a change of the
wind, Tho flimcs were then carried acro-s
the road to a pile of lumber containing
about 100.000 feet, and tu -cferal piles
of logs containing a lite amount, which
were consumed. Here tho flames wcra-taj
ed. About this time a fire company from
Morrisvillo bal arrived with their extin
guisher, and aided materially in staving the
progress of the flames. The M. E. church and
several dwellings were on fire at various times.
At one time it wa thought that tho whole
village woull bo consumed and many dwcl-
ings and places of business were emptied of
their movable content. An estimate of the
losses was made as follows S. A. Fifo, on
tore, $2,500; insurance $1,000; EJson
Pinncy, store and good, $2,300; insurance
$1,500: William Hamilton, grist mill and
grain, $0.P00; inuranco $2,000; S. II.

ance $1,000; E. M. Gifford. tencmentblock
and dwelling house, $0,000; insurance on
dwelling $1,200, tho insurance on the block
na-ring expired hut a few days previously.
Mr. Gilford supposing tho policy had a year
longer to run ; J. J. Bobbins, household
furniture, $100; no insurance; Moses Gray,
on camo, $100. and Alpheus Nichols, $50,
with no insurance. Tnat tbe fire was the
work of a malicious incendiary is doubted
by no one. and suspicion points pretty much

in a time of financial depression will make
