BUNNELL WANTS THE ' *
TANANA JUDGSHIP
This afternoon Fred Martin, one of
the two Democratic territorial commit
teemen for this division, received a
wire from Charles E. Bunnell stating
emphatically that he was a candidate
for the judgship of the Fourth judi
cial division and had been a candi
date for months, says the Fairbanks
News-Mines of December 11. He al
so added that his application was in
for the position.
Bunnell’s wire settled definitely
considerable doubt which had arisen
here as to his position. The night the
News-Miner published the news of
Judge Fuller’s resignation it also stat
ed that Bunnell was a candidate for
the judgship. This statement was de
nied the next day by leading demo
crats of the city, who stated that he
wasn’t a candidate and never had
been. At that the subject rested, but
rumor persisted from authentic sourc
es.
This afternoon Fred Martin states
that Bunnell was a candidate when
he was in this city in the event that !
a vacancy should open the way, and
has been working to secure the place.
His telegram seems to settle the mat
ter definitely.

Shortly after the outbreak of the
war in Europe the American Bankers'
Association wired throughout the
world stopping the issue of travel
ers’ checques on foreign countries en
gaged in war. It will be remembered
thnt financial conditions tightened up
so strongly thnt the American entiser
Tennessee had to tnke over $5,000,000
In gold to bring bnck stranded Amer
icans,
Now, apparently, conditions hnvc
cleared up greatly and the following
letter received by Malcolm Brock,
manager of the First Bank of Cor
dova, from the Bankers' Trust Co.
Vail Street, New York, sheds some
light on the present situation:
"Certain ** conditions have since
chanced in such n manner as to war
rant us in now authorizing you to
Issue American Bankers' Association
travelers' checques for use in all
parts of the world. The writer has
jusl used such checques in England,
France and Switzerland without the
slightest friction, and has positive In
formation that they arc being taken
in other European countries. We do
net believe that tourists will care to
visit Europe while the war lasts, but
there is every possibility that sonic of
your customers having business there
may be obliged to do so, and we are
certain that the association checques
will give them the best possible ser
vice.
"We do not wish to be understood,
however, as desiring to encourage
travel anywhere in Europe while the
present condition of war exists, and
we are only authorizing you to issue
I he checques in order to place it
within your power to accommodate
those who are obliged to go to Eu
rope and not with the idea of induc
ing anyone to make the trip who is
not under the necessity of doing so.
"Should any of your customers have
io visit any of the European countries,
we shall he most, pleased to have yon
give them letters of introduction to
its, and we shall be glad to give thorn
such advice and assistance as may lie
within our power. The writer having
jus1 returned from Europe, where he
lias been continuously since the out
break of the war, is thoroughly famil
iar with existing conditions, and will
l e glad to co-operate with you in every
way possible to protect such of your
customers ns may have to go a
broad.”
