NEW YORK, Dec. 22—The directors of the United States Stel corporation today announced that there would be no general reduction of wages in the plants of the concern. Dec, 22—It is expected that the attorneys of Harry Thaw will begin new habeas corpus proceedings in New Hampshire to prevent the car rying out of the ruling of the U. S. supreme court that he may be extra dited from that state and taken to New York. It is said that a long and strenous legal flglit will be waged by Thaw’s attorneys to prevent him from being taken, and it will probably be a long time before he will be inside of Tombs prison, where the New York authori ties plan to keep him after he is ex tradited, pending his trial on the charge of conspiracy to escape from the insane asylum at Matteawan. -:o:~ CARGO COAL COMING ON THE LATOUCHE The freighter Latouche will arrive here Thursday at midnight. It is admitted that if these nations can be brought to the aid of Russia in the invasion of Aus tria and Germany, they will prove an important fac tor in the struggle. 0 E Ifl PO 0 CAE BIE FIGHT COMING LONDON, Dec. 22—It is asserted by military ex ports here that the outcome of tin* German advance in Poland is still problematical, and that tin* decisive battle 4)' the campaign has still to be fought. While it is freely admitted that the Russian center has talh n back, it *ts also asserted that it has been strongly reinforced, and that it is holding the tier mans back along tin* Bzura river, where the Rus sinus are now occupying strongly intrenched posi tion. BELIEVE KAISER’S VISIT TO THE WEST INDICATES THAT THE GREATER IMPORTANCE LONDON, Dec. 22—British observers believe that the departure of the Kaiser from Berlin to the western front, indicates that lie regards that field to be of greater importance than the east. Although the allies are exerting pressure all along tin* line both in France and Belgium, the real work of driving the Germans back will not begin for several weeks yet. It is stated that fear of Bul garia alone has prevented Rouniania from invading Austria and entering the war on the side of the allies. Bulgaria, however, is still hostile to Servia and Greece, because they are holding Macedonia, that strip of country lying between Servia and Greece, and u ill not take sides with the allies until the differ cnees exisiting over the retention of this strip shall have been adjusted. The faction opposed to 'arranza ure disposed to regard his de parture from Vera Cruz as Sight, fol dwing the defeat of his army at Pue Pin.
