THE CORDOVA DAILY TIMES GREATER CORDOVA'S GREATEST NEWSPAPER H. G. STEEL. C. H. WILCOX. C. H. SCHEFFLER, Publisher* H. G. STEEL, Editor and Manager C. H. WILCOX, City Editor. SUBSCRIPTION RATKS: Single Copies .$ .10 Six Months (In advance) ... $ 6.00 One Month . 1.00 One Year (In advance) .... 10.00 Daily and Weekly, by carrier or mall, $1.25 per month. ASSOCIATED PRESS TELEGRAPHIC REPORTS. CORDOVA, ALASKA, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1914. THE DAILY TIMES wishes every one of its readers a Happy New Year and believes that in doing so it can almost make a promise that the coming twelve months will afford greater opportunities for our people, as the territory is just entering upon its real develop ment. --:o ALLOWS HIMSELF TO BE JOSHED INTO BELIEVING HE’S A BOSS COUNCILMAN Goodall is the latest of the ring to han ker after the spotlight, and the “official organ” gives him space to have a spasm, such as one of his col league's recently indulged in. The only elifference is that the broad-faced ( barley elo<*s not seem to be able* te> eliscriminate* between a eliscussion of public officials and a personal attack l,P°n ft private individual. How unkind it was for this “statesman” to give the e*elite>r e>f the Daily Times that cruel thrust about having risen from a menial position to one that gives him the opportunity erf publishing in colei print the facts about questionable deeds of a servant of the people. AI though we have only elealt with his public re*ceml lot it be* un derstooel that if he* desires it might prove interesting reading te> tell a few things of a personal nature. However much we dislike to <>nte*r into such a controversy, if Goodall, Bervle* or any of the others feel that they are privilegeel to this kind of argument we are* perfectly willing te> throw derwn the* bars. Anel if such be the e*elict Goodall may wish he was back in Nome among the* thousands erf “alser there’s” instead of at tempting ter perse in Corelova as a pe*rson erf some intellect or prestige. Simply because we* jersheel him about being a boss it has evidently l<*tt him unde*r the* impre*ssiern that there might be some truth in it. Better elisabuse* yourself erf any such illusion, Charley, for those* acquaintenl with the* inne*r workings of the* mediocre majerrity erf the* council know from whom they have received their instructions. But in the* meantime, ineli viduals erf the* Goodall character want ter bear in mind that this paper has nothing to fear from them, and is independent enough at all times to express its opinion erf any public official, whether they sqirm or not. The* dirty, veiled insinuations cast by “the* boss” will avail him nothing, but on the* other hand, if the Times has anything to say against his questiernabh' me*thods as a councilman it will eler so fearlessly and forcefully so that there can be* no mistaking what we mean or where we stanel. -: o: ALASKA’S RESOURCES ARE BEING RECOGNIZED AT WASHINGTON WE congraulate Secretary Daniels upon having dis covered that an unlimited amount of Alaska coal is exactly adapted for use in the navy. Of course Ves pucius did not discover America but after it was discovered lie succeeded in having it named after himself. n ^GCretary was n.ot tho first to discover the virtue of that Alaska coal, but his confirming report will cause tht people generally to be more reconciled to pay for a govern inent railway in Alaska. But the men of Alaska have known it for several years, all the time that they have been buying I ennsylvania, West Virginia or foreign coal; all the time that the country’s Pacific fleet has been doing the same thing. It was perfectly known by other men who long ago would have built the needed road and would have had the coal for sale on the sea shore, but the government stopped them lest a great monopoly might be built up. Instead of permitting the work to go on and then by law compelling the owners to deliver their product at a reason able pi ice, the work was stopped short, thus perpetrating a shameful wrong upon the men of Alaska and levying a shame ful tax upon the government itself. We sometimes think that the government ought to estab lish an advisory commission to be located in the far west, for the sole purpose of advising our eastern presidents and con gressmen about the real conditions in the west and recommend ing what laws should be passed for the west. The men in of fice in \\ ashington are generally brilliant and patriotic men. 1 hey want to do the right thing by the whole country. Most of them have traveled and are well posted on European af fairs and geography, but as when a man looks along a straight railway the rails seem to draw nearer together until they unite at a point up the road, most of our wise statesmen’s visions come fo a point at the eastern base of the Rocky mountains and they can see nothing beyond. They can tell you the exact height of St. Peter’s highest pinnacle, but they do not know the height of Rainier or Shasta, or which is in Washington or which is in California, and as for Alaska they know less about it than they do about Siberia on the other shore of Bering sea. And they are just about as daft about the public thought of the west, but nurse the belief that western men and western opinions, must be considered only with a little more charity than is bestowed upon the head-hunters of the Philippines. Hence we suggest that a commission be appointed to be located in Alaska, the business of which should be to act as an intel ligence office for the government at Washington, that it may eventually educate up to an intelligent knowledge of the west, and outgrow the idea which Mr. Cleveland expressed when he deplored the admision of “unwelcome states.” -:o: Any position to which there is not attached a $10 per day graft is likely considered a menial one by the “straw boss” of the city council. Evidently Charley (joodall has been getting too much ad vertising since lie broke into the city council. As a result he has become all puffed up and at times acts as though he were a real political boss. Can you imagine a narrow bird like that as the domininating force in affairs of Cordova and realize what In* would do in such a position if lie had the powerf Charley’s best bet is the simple life where he could not make an exhibi tion of himself and make all who take the time to give him the once over, whenever the council meets, laugh their heads off. The “straw” man is a whole lot funnier that he knows any thing about and bis attacks upon other people make even more ridiculous, if this be possible. -*-: o: Hobson proposes to keep on pressing his prohibition resolu tion, his motto being, “If at first you don’t succeeed, dry, dry again. ” The Seattle Times states that' steamship men of that city are pre paring for a record tourist travel to Alaska during the coming summer. -lor-r A temporary dock is being built at Skagway to replace the Moore dock recently burned. A permanent, dock will be constructed next spring. -:o: GROCERY NOTES Quality Highest—Prices Lowest. 14 tbs Best Granulated Sugar for $1 at HLUM & CO. -. o: Dally Times gets Associated Press dispatches.
