" _ ■—__ ('(>U I >< >U A, ALASKA, 1’Rl DAY, OCTOBER 27, 1916. FROM WILSON’S OLD FRIEND. < 'olonrl Harvey, the brilliant editor of the North American Review, the man who made Woodrow Wilson governor of New • hr.'i v a1111 president of the United States, springs the slogan in 1 lie October number of his journal: “Hughes for America lii-t; V ibnn tnr \\ ilson first.’’ And then the man who knows llir President as perhaps no other man knows him proceeds to the business of crucifying his “hazy theories” and “fascinat ing articulation,” paying particular attention to the fiasco in Mexico in these words: "Six months have elapsed since General Pershing attempt id the impossible, scores ol‘ our soldiers have been killed and others captured have been sent back naked or in rags, Villa is iveruitiug a fresh force about sixty miles north of the place " here he was last buried, our suffering and' humiliated troops ai '- in'll I in constant peril, as a football of politics, in a long thin lim across the desert and an overtaxed people is called upon to pay $luil.ii(Mi,llU() to meet the exigienev of a presidential year; u liilf a putative joint commission sits occasionally and sails in (• rmitteiitly under a tacit obligation to do nothing and to get nowhere before election day.” Colonel Harvey then quotes Secretary Lansing’s ominous ih-seriplion of (lie situation, and adds: ‘‘ \\ hat may yet happen under inexplicably senseless will lul and obdurate guidance God alone knows. But we do insist i I “ii (In' evidence cited above (Lansing’s statement) that this ir ( deplorable and most mortifying occurrence in the annals ■ i American history might and would have been averted bv eai ly recognition by Wilson of the fact, which we tried desper ately Iml vainly to impress upon his mind, that he had been 1 ' ted pn sidi at, not of Humanity, but of the United States of \.>> oil pul! Had he recognized this fact we should not have had the endlessly humiliating billet douxing with Germany, and the Mexican situation never would have shamed us. But \\e would have missed a gigantic quantity of “fascinating ar tieiilafion." w hich seems to charm a great many Americans. Did plat it udc> in the latest linqual adornment usually do cliai in us until too late. “He kept us out of war!” I" reality he sent us into war and made it possible for a treacherous eiiemv to kill our own soldiers with our own bullet s! -:o; FOUR HUNDRED THIRTY-SIX HOWLANDS. Hetty Green’s recent death discovers to the trustees of her affaii how numerous tin* Howlands are in the United States. I hey have received hundreds of letters from persons hearing the I lew land name or related to Howlands, claiming shares in the Sylvia -Vim Howland estate, worth about $1,250,000. This estate was relcasi d by Hetty’s death. She had a life interest in it. I he propelt_\ will lie distributed among the descendants of I 'ideon Jlow'land, of Dartmouth, Mass. Yarioua newspapers of the country have printed tales of Howlands in their com mander who expect their ships to be berthed by Hetty’s pass ’! he trustees of the estate have issued a statement that will dash many hopes. One paragraph says that while many supposi Gideon and Hetty were descendants of John, the M ay flower Howland, this is not true. They come by another branch of the How land tree. Furthermore, say the trustees, all the heirs an* known. There arc* 4.% of them, their titles are clear, tiic books are closed and the other Howlands can’t get a look in. It is one of the estates about which there apparently cun lie no quarreling, so clearly have the investigators marked the lives of lineage. There are only a few of tis who don’t imagine we have “something coming” from some mysterious pot of the distant past. Thousands of persons give away sums of ban! and per fectly u able money year after year in phantasmagoric pursuit of mythical estates. Often they do this in spite of official rec ords that completely nullify their claims. It has proved profit able to a class of lawyers. -;o; It is highly improbable that German bombs inflicted any thing like the damage in England which tin* Overseas News Agency reports. It undoubtedly is exaggerated beyond <t,U rea son. Germany has no means of obtaining figures of s^teh pre tentious exactness. But there is no doubt that fW* &‘ppclins are keeping the whole George island in a state. vJf fear near the H> -1< Heal. Reports probably were Sent out- (n order to bolster up the faking International News Service* which Hearst has been coloring to bolster up his very strong pro German attitude. — :o: Henry Ford's affections for Miss Democracy don’t run deep enough to cause him to contribute to her support. -:o: If I’resident Wilson would only come out from behind bis rhetoric now and then so that we could see the real man! -:o:-— The retention of the word “obey” in tin* Episcopal mar riage ,-ervice again brings to our attention, brethren, the vacu ity of words.
