picture star looms on the horizon as
the result of the selection of Edith
May of Monroe, Wis., as winner of
the national salesgirl beauty con
test, conducted by the Mayflower
Photoplay corporation in conjunction
with several thousand of the coun
try’s foremost department stores and
shops.

chritude. By the terms of the con
test, the fortunate Miss May falls
heir to a six weeks’ engagement in
the Ziegfeld Follies and a part in It.
A. Walsh’s new photoplay for May
flower. Overwhelmed by her sudden
rise to the affluent status of the
country’s most widely exploited wo
man and a potential stage and screen
star, Miss May arrived in New York
in quest of fame and fortune. She
has started rehearsals in a specialty
act that will mark her professional
debut in the Ziegfeld roof. Coinci
dent with her appearance in the
Follies, the erstwhile shop girl will
receive a thorough preparatory train
ing in screen acting under the tute
lage of Miriam Cooper, well known
motion picture star, who will act as
her professional mentor.
R. A. Walsh, upon meeting the j
sales girl beauty, enthused over her
possibilities as a screen star. "Not |
alone has she the physical qualifi
cations to win her way to picture
stardom, but she also seems to pos
sess an instinctive sense of panto-j
mime and an abundance of self-con- j
fidence, vitality and poise,” said the j
noted producer.
In winning the contest Miss May
brings to a close the first chapter j
of a real life story that reads like j
a modern version of “Cinderella.” j
Born in Monroe. Wis., seventeen
years ago, the petite shop girl left
school at an early age to earn her
own living. For the past two years
she has toiled behind the counter
of a department store. Totally
oblivious to the drabness of her sur
roundings. according to her naive
confession, she lived always in a j
world of fancy in which she saw her- j
self ever bowing to tbe plaudits of a
brilliant theater audience. And now,
whisked away on the magic carpet f
of success from a dingy small town |
store to the opulent luxuries that is |
the lot of a stage and screen star, j
her dream has come true.

Company of Chicago, is in charge
of a crew of expert bridge construe- j
tion men across the Susitna river
and they expect to swing the steel j
bridge across the river before Christ- j
mas for the government railroad.
The bridge will represent one of the
largest of its kind in Alaska.

high schools appear to want to send
their 1920 football teams against the

year claimed the western inter
scholastic championship and tied

title.
Everett's former opponents, high
school teams of Aberdeen, \ an

and Bellingham, have not accepted
invitations to play. The only prep
school games Everett has in sight
are with the Eugene. Ore., high

Belief is held here that other

sented by strong teams this year
and do not want to risk defeat.
