♦ SERIOUS WRECK ON SOUTHERN PACIFIC SAN FRANCISCO. Nov. 1 (by As sociated Press).—Fireman H. A. Rast of Santa Cruz was killed, and the en gineer and many passengers injured, in a wreck last night of a Southern Pacific train at Opal, between Santa Cruz and Watsonville. ‘ MURDERER MISS CRUGER GETS PRISON SENTENCE BOLOGNA, Italy, Nov. 1 (by Asso ciated Press).—Alfredo Cocchi was found guilty yesterday of the murder of Ruth Cruger, New York high school girl, in 1917, and sentenced to 27 years imprisonment. FILIPINOS TO FIGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE MANILA, Nov. 1 (by Associated Press).—The Philippine house yester day passed a bill providing for a per manent annual fund of 11,000,000 for an independence commission, and for setting forth claims of the islands for complete independence. UNSETTLED WEATHER FOR ELECTION DAY WASHINGTON, Nov. 1 (by Asso ciated Press).—Unsettled weather on election day in the Mississippi val ley and generally in the north and west, except the extreme northwest ern states, was forecasted today by the weather bureau. SMALLPOX IS i LIGHT FORM AT UNALASKA Although five new cases of small pox developed at Unaiasaka last week, advices from there say the situation is well in hand and no serious epidemic is anticipated. Responding to a telegraphic re quest from Gov. Riggs, the U. S. S. Saturn, en route to Pribilof Islands, turned aside and went to Unalaska. The Saturn had ninety-five tubes Of vaccine, which aided considerably in combatting the disease. Advices from Supt. Lopp at Seattle say the Algonquin left there several days ago with vaccine and other sup plies for the sufferers, including fuel and food. The Unalga is now at Unalaska giving every possible as sistance. Late advices indicate the epdemic is in a 'mild form and that a severe I epidemic is not likely. At the latest report there were 24 cases at Un-) alaska and 10 at Akutan. Dr. Newland. who is conducting ; the fight against the disease, is connected with the Jessie Lee ! school, established by the Methodist i church, and has been appointed by ! both the surgeon general, public j health service, and the territorial ; health authorities to handle the situation.
