EDITOR GUILTY BUT JURY ASKS MERCY BE USED NEW YORK. Dor. 20 (by Associ ated Press).—The'case of Edward A. Rumeley. charged with concealing al leged German ownership of the New York Evening Mail during the war, was given to the jury late Saturday. Rumeley and his co-defendants, Walter Kaufman and Norvin Lind lieim, were acquitted by the jury on three counts in the indictment charg ing conspiracy to withhold from the government knowledge of alleged German ownership of the paper, but were found guilty on two other counts. The jury recommended that the court use mtercy in its sentence. PRICES TWENTY PERCENT BELOW WAR TIME PEAK WASHINGTON, Dec. 20 (by Asso ciated Press).—Wholesale prices dropped 8 per cent in November and are now lower than at any time since the war, the department of labor an nounced today, the present prices be ing 24 per cent below the peals high prices during the war. Statistics of the bureau show a further decrease of 2 1-2 per cent in the retail prices of food for Novem ber and December. At Seattle the figures show decreases for the two months last named of 4 per cent. As a batter of tremendous power; spectacular outfielder and baserunner, he ranks as a sensa tional star who by the individuality of his play draws throngs of fans to the ball parks wherever he ap pears. Cobb was born in Royston, Go., in 1886 and joined the ranks of profes sional ball players in 1904. The fol lowing year the donned a Detroit uni form and continued to play with that club until the close of the 1918 penant season, w-hen he enlisted in the chemical warfare service and was later promoted to the rank of cap tain. Cobb has batted year in and year out well above .200, leading the American league for 10 years in suc cession. Following the war, Cobb returned to the ball field as a member of the Tigers, again playing a sensational game during the seasons of 1919 and 1920. He is one of the real idols of baseball and his selection as leader of the Tigers will undoubt edly bring great prestige again to that club. Cobb is part owner of a bank in Georgia. HAWAIIAN SWIMMER ESTABLISHES NEW RECORD HONOLULU, Dec. 20 (by Associ ated Press). — The 100-yard back stroke swimmnig record was broken here Saturday by Warren Kealopa, a Hawaiian swimmer who partici pated in the Olympia games.
