The blanket is made of the finest of red felt cloth, of the same quality of cloth used on bil liard or pool tables, and was ma terial used by English army officers for their uniforms. The beaded work is artistic and represents a wolf, the lines being carried out by different colored beads. Rev. A. P. Kashevaroff says the blankets is one of the valuable acquisitions to the museum and should certainly be inspected by all who visit the museum. The original wolf blanket was pre sented to the Alaska historical museum on December 19, 1919, by David Kahnkitah, a Sitka native. It was used by the Koclcwahntahn tribe in their ceremonial potlach dances. The wolf crest as used by the Kockwahntahn tribe originally came from Yakutat. It was given to them by a high caste woman named Kah yets-tahn. The wolf pole belonged to her son — Kah-yet-kwatkeen. When Kahnki-tah’s uncle built his first house in a village in Icy straits he erected four corner posts and one middle post carved to represent the wolf crest. During the celebration the completion of the house one slave was killed to mark the great occasion and to proclaim the great ness of Kahnwitah’s uncle. At the close of the ceremonies the clan de cided to make a wolf blanket which could be carried with the chief of the clan in all his trips where the cere mony required the use of the wearing of the blanket.
