Bert W. Dyer, department ol in
terior mine mine inspector tor Alas
ka, has been appointed government
representative in connection with the
administration of coal-land leases
granted by the secretary of the in
terior for the United States in Alas
ka, subsequent to advices received
from Washington to that effect. Mr.
Dyer’s headquarters are in Fairbanks
where he has been stationed since
late last fall.
A recent order issued by Secre
tary Payne announced the appoint
ment and outlined the duties as fol
lows:
“In connection with the administra
tion of coal-land leases granted by
the secretary of the interior for the
United States in the territory of
Alaska under the act of congress ap
proved October 20, 1914, and regula
tions issued May 18, 1916, 1 hereby
designate and authorize Bert W.
Dyer, department of the interior mine
inspector for Alaska, as ‘the author
ized representative of the lessor,
charged with the duty of supervising
operations and performing other func
tions imposed by the law, regula
tions, or leases upon the local rep
resentative of the department of the
interior in Alaska in connection with
the operation of such coal leases. Mr.
Dyer will see that mining opera
tions are conducted with due regard
for the preservation of the property,
the prevention of undue waste, and
the safety and welfare of the miners.
“The notation of leases, assign
ments of, cancellations or modifica
tions, surveys, and other matters af
fecting the status of the lands, when
issued or approved, will be made by
the local and general land offices
under the supervision of the com
missioner of the general land office.
Rentals and royalties shall be paid to
the local land office and be disposed
of under the supervision of the com
missioner of hte general land office.
“In all cases the right of appeal
to the secretary of the interior from
the action of those representing the
lessor is hereby granted and recog
nized, said right to be exercised as
nearly as practicable in accordance
with the practice governing other ap
peals.”
APPLICATION MADE FOR
MANUFACTURING SITE
Application for a trade manufac
turing site on the west coast of Cold
bay on the Alaska peninsula has been
made to the Juneau land office by
William E. Keith and W. E. Mass,
according to an announcement by
Register Frank A. Boyle, at Juneau.
The ground wanted contains 80 acres.
The application states that the site
is needed for oil docks, warehouses
and other facilities for use in con
nection with the development of hold
ings of Mr. Mass, and others in the
Cold bay field. Recent reports from
Seattle said it was understood, that
Mr. Mass, who has made application
for an oil leasing and prospecting
permit in the Cold bay field, has se
cured financial backing to the ex
tent of $1,000,000 for development.

BRIBERY CHARGE
WASHINGTON, Feb, 16 (by Asso
ciated Press).—M. S. Johnson, a
juror in the half million dollar alien
ation suit of David W. Sullivan
against John T. Davis, has been ar
rested charged with having offered to
accept $5,000 from the defendant to
vote for a dismissal of the case. The”
court declared a mistrial.

Oil Claim No. 2, unsurveyed, on the
south by the Ruby Oil Claim No. 10,
Ruby Oil Claim No. 9, Bonanza Oil
Claim No. 2, all unsurveyed, on the
west by the Ruby Oil Claim No. 6.
