'University Boys Take Lead
in Movement of Prime
Importance
PHILADELPHIA, April 4. Univer
sity of Pennsylvania boys have taken
the lead in a movement which econo
mists agree is one of prime import
ance for the financial and mental
welfare of America. They are aiding
to educate both foreign and native
born residents of Philadelphia in
sound principles of personal finance,
thrift and safe and profitable invest
ment.
These workers have realized that
instruction in these subjects without
concrete practice and example is
often without effect and many of
them are making regular canvassing
trips throughout the more densely
populated districts of the city, induc
ing the purchase of government sav
ings securities, such as savings
stamps and savings certificates. Reg
ular trips are made to encourage the
regular laying aside of a certain
portion of each week’s earnings and
the canvasser travels from door to
door, overlooking no opportunity.
The results of this work have been
most helpful and satisfactory and
have been reflected strongly in the
attitude of those addressed, both in
the purchase of securities and the
piling up of saving funds.
In connection with this work,
Charles O. Wright, general secretary
of the Young Men’s Christian Asso
ciation of the University of Pennsyl
vania, writes to William Mather
Lewis, director of the savings di
vision of the treasury:
“I should like to tell you in just
a word, something of the work that
the Christian Association of the
University of Pennsylvania is doing
in the sale of thrift stamps and
treasury savings stamps.
“We have a ftumber of students
who volunteer for work in our uni
versity settlement house, which is
conducted by the Christian Associa
tion. A number of these men go
throughout the more thickly populat
ed districts of the city from door to
door selling the stamps. This item
of our work has assumed large pro
portions and a number of people
have found themselves with savings
on their hands and a habit of sav
ing in their lives in this time of
peculiar industrial stress.”
RAILROAD SCRAP IRON
SAVES PENNSYLVANIA
THOUSANDS EACH YEAR
PHILADELPHIA. Pa.. April 4 (by
Associated Press). — The Pennsyl
vania railroad loaded and shipped to
buyers 4,500 tons of scrap iron and
steel from its scrap docks in Colum
bus, Ohio, in the month of January,
it was announced at the Offices here.
The scrap is made up of metal dis
carded by its shops in the southwest
ern region, from old rails and iron
wreckage brought in from various
parts of the road, and from metal
worn out in operation of the railroad.
Only that part of the metal which
cannot be reclaimed is sold for
waste or scrap iron. By combing
one part of new spring steel with
fifteen parts of old spring steel
I picked out in the scrap dock, 7,875
rebuilt locomotive springs were sal
vaged last year. Springs are rebuilt
in this way at a cost of 3.4 cents a
pound, while new springs cost ten
cents a pound.
There are about 6,000 tons of scrap
in the dock at the present time.
During 1920 more than 22,000 tons
of scrap were sold. This material
at the present time is worth only
about ten dollars a ton, but by re
claiming a considerable part for its
use, the Pennsylvania saves many
thousands of dollars which it would
otherwise spend in buying new ma
terial and parts.
Forty-five men are employed to
sort the material into the piles which
can be used again by the railway,
and the parts which are no longer
useful. Old bolts are taken into
the blacksmoth shop, sorted accord
ing to sizes, rethreaded and returned
to service. Old axles are heated,
ponded into long iron bars, and then
turned in the machine shop into new
parts for locomotives.
Fawns of reindeer ar§ strong and
fleet of foot a few hours after their
birth.
