W. J. Reeder, deputy collector of Nome. Merchandise valued at $293, 105 was shipped from Nome to Siber ian ports during the same period. Imports from Siberia consisted most ly of furs and ivory valued at $420, G06. “The announcement that President Harding will visit Alaska,” said J. Li. McPherson, of the Alaska bureau of the Chamber of Commerce, "is a splendid indication not only of the attitude of the president but of the the whole administration toward the territory. It means a great thing for Alaska. While Harding was a mem ! her of the senate committee on ter ritories he was one of the most help ful members in securing beneficial legislation for Alaska. He was one of the senators who secured the pas sage of the appropriation items fcr the Alaska railway.” Great interest is manifested in farming land3 in the interior of Alaska along the line of the govern ment railway, according to word re ceived here from Secretary Moyer of the Anchorage Chamber of Com merce. Nearly 100 letters were re ceived by him recently from the mid dle west asking for information re garding agricultural lands in the north. Most of the letters were re ceived from Finnish farmers, who are accustomed to agricultural work in cold climates. It is estimated that fifteen gold lode mines and five prospects were operated in Alaska in 1920, produc ing about 3.270,000 tons of ore, from which $4,360,000 worth of gold and 106,000 ounces of silver were re ceived. The output in 1919 was 3, 262,573 tons of ore, contained gold to the value of $4,392,237, and 108, 691 ounces of silver. m Charles Brown of the firm of Brown & Hawkins, returned to Seat tle from New York during the week, brining confirmation of the pre viously published report of the forma tion of the ne\v Brown & Hawkins syndicate with an initial capital of a half-million dollars. The new Browm & Hawkins corporation now holds options on several established busi ness and banking concerns from Ketchikan to Kuskokwim including Juneau and Cordova. It is the inten tion of the company to branch out all ' over the north in merchandising, fur, banking and transportation, with a view of ultimately becoming on the American side what the Hudson Bay Company was on the Canadian side. Although preparations generally for the 1921 salmon pack indicate cur tailment of operations, the following announcements have been made for this season: SOUTHEASTERN ALASKA Libby, McNeill and Libby have shipped a full cargo of supplies and cannery hands to the Taku and Yakutat canneries. The Hetta Packing Company has been incorporated, with Peter Black, en, president, and Louis Halvorsen, secretary-treasurer and superintend ent, for operation of a small cannery on Hetta inlet. Prince of Wales isl and. The Hetta Packing Company will also put up a pack of mild cured salmon. The Alaska Sanitary Packing Com pany is preparing to open its Wran gell cannery. The Alaska Union Fisheries, Inc., at Port Chatham, will resume opera tions on about the same scale as last year. The Annette Island Packing Com pany will resume salmon packing in a small way at Metlakatla. John L. Carlson & Co., are com pleting plans for the reopening of their cannery at Aub harbor, near Juneau. The Chilkat Canning Co., started at Haines last year, is preparing to double its salmon pack this year. The Douglas Island Packing Com pany, which has been operating all winter, will continue operations this summer. The Hidden Inlet Pacikng Co., is making limited preparations for a pack at Hood bay. The Hoonah Packing Co. will oper ate on a smaller scale than usual. George T. Myers & Co. are expect ed to open the Sitka bay plant. The North Pacific Trading & Packing Co. will keep its plant closed at Klawock tor the first time in 41 years. The Petersburg Packing Corpora tion is expected to open in a small way at Petersburg. No definite an nouncement has been made. The Northwestern Fisheries Com pany is planning keep all south eastern plants closed this season. Karl Hansen will resume mild cur ing operations at Port Alexander as soon as the supply of king salmon warrants. SOUTHERN AND WESTERN ALASKA The Carlisle Company vill oper ate at Cordova this season. The Abercrombie cannery, Alaska Packers Association, Alaska Sea Food Company, Alitak Packing Com pany, Eyak River Packing Company, and the Arctic Packing Company are making preparation to operate this season. The Prince William Sound Packing & Fertilizer Company will start can ning herring and making fertilizer and fish meal at Valdez this sum mer. Wm. A. E. Harris & Co., False Pass; Katmai Packing Co., north end ot Kodiak island; H. O. O’Reilly, a new plant at Kanatak, Portage bay, at the west end of Shilikol’ straits; Hoonai’ cannery at Bering river; San Juar Fishing and Packing Co. at Seward; Pioneer and Surf Packing Gompan ies. canning clams at Cordova. 'Canneries operated by the Pacific American Fisheries Co., at Hoonah Excursion Inlet and Gambier bay will not be reopened this season, ac cording to a recent announcement oi the company. The klawock cannery which hat operated every season sinces its con struction, forty-four years ago, wil suspend operations for the 1921 sea son, according to the Northern Pa cific Trading and Packing Company owners of the plant, in southeaster! Alaska. Bristol bay operators are cutting down the number of operating lines for the 1921 season. The Carlisle Packing Co., has sen ecpiipmcnt and crew to the cannerj operated at the mouth of the Yukoi river. The Pacific American fisheries wil resume operations at Port Mooler.
