Bank Robber at Anchorage
Was High Priced Workman
With Elusive Tendencies
Vice-President R. N. Moyer, of the
Bank of Alaska, of Anchorage, places
the bank’s loss from last week's
bold robbery at $2,514. This stated
sum was arrived at in checking up
and balancing of business during the
day of the hold-up. Anchorage's first
bank robber is a high-priced work
man, as it took him less than
five minutes to hold up the bank and
make his get-away with the swag,
which was all in currency. The sil
ver and gold in the counter tray
were untouched. Nor did the bandit
attempt to rob the vault, but used
it for the safe-keeping of Doc Mad
den and Mrs. Gelles, along with the
other valuables, says the Anchorage
Times.
Three arrests were made yesterday
and last night and the three tem
porary prisoners quickly released.
There was no substantiating evidence
in either case. The town is full of
suspects; in fact there are as many
suspects as theories and everyone
is entitled to a theory.
But why pick on Uncle Harry Bax
ter, who states he has absorbed
enough Sherlock Holmes exploded
theories to run a gas plant. It, the
bank robbery was, and still is the
elastic subject of conversation every
place the theorists and embryo detec
tives congregate. It was also a hum
mer for the Times newsboys.
In all seriousness, the bank robbery
was a serious affair; the question of
apprehension also is one of moment.
Not this moment probably, but in
time. No one has offered themselves
up yet; but the officials have hopes.
The federal officials are assisting
the local officers in the search for
the bank robber. They have lots of
clues and are working in harmony.
Seward and all outlying stations
have been notified of the robbery.
Every one is on the lookout for the
daylight robber who pulled a stunt
unequaled in Alaska history. For
this Anchorage is grateful and the
Bank of Alaska will not suffer any
financial loss, being fully covered
by insurance.
That the robbery was the work of
an artist is admitted. Local sleuths
have advanced a very plausible rou
tine of action which includes his
(the robber) going east through the
alley back of the bank to D street
and into the McKinley building by the
D street entrance; thence up the
Btairway to the hallway, down the
hallway to the front stairs, down the
stairs to the Fourth avenue entrance
(where he put on his full-faced mask)
out of the door into the Bank of Alas
ka where he locked Madden and Mrs.
Gelles in the vault and cooly and
calmly collected considerable cur
rency and departed by the front
door. From then on all trace has]
been lost. That he departed by the!
front door is a known fact. Accord-'
ing to the story told by Doc Mad
den, whose proverbial dry vein of hu
mor does not let him look upon the
affair seriously, the robber immediate
ly locked the front bank door, upon
entering yesterday noon, and pulled
down the door shade. Doc was pre-'
vailed upon to pull down the window
shade and with equal celerity fol
lowed the robber’s instructions to get
in the vault. Being a gentleman born
Doc allowed Mrs. Gelles to precede
him in the vault where they passed
an uncomfortable ten minutes until
released by Mr. Moyer.
That the robher turned south on
Fourth and east through the alley
after perpetrating the robbery is sub
stantiated by the fact of finding his
cap and mask, by Charles Olsen, in
the alley back of the Arcade Pool
room. The theory has been advanced
that he had an accomplice waiting
and who acted as a lookout. It is
also evident that he was a regular
yegg, as the robbery was carried out
with utmost precision and success.
Both Madden and Mrs. Gelles state
the robber spoke excellent English
and was master of himself at all
times, showing no signs of weaken
ing, nor did the big barreled Colt’s
automatic waver the fraction of an
inch when leveled at their middle
parts. They very discreetly obeyed
the captain’s instructions implicitly.
There is a law, well defined, which
covers vagrancy; the law applies to
Anchorage and it is understood that
“from now on” the law will be
strictly enforced giving the unem
ployed an opportunity to answer
embarrassing questions. In the mean
time the man hunt goes joyously on;
Anchorage has something real excit
ing to talk about and the guarantee
company has been notified of the
largest one-gunman bank robbery in
the history of the territory which is
rapidly assuming state rights.

NENANA, May 20. — Captain
Smythe, owner of the wrecked steam
er Shusana, arrived in Nenana sev
eral days ago and is engaged in sal
vaging the craft, which was shoved
up on .the bank, near the commis
sion sawmill, last spring by the ice,
so badly damaged that it was not
considered worth while making re
pairs. The boat is being torn to
pieces, about the only valuable part
left intact being the boilers and
engines.
Recent arrivals from the Fair
banks district bring the report that
the strike on Kokomo creek is not
panning out as well as was expected,
the indications being that the pay
does not extend more than a few
claims below discovery. The streak
of gold narrows down steadily be
low discovery, having the appearance
of tapering to a point, and it is
also said that the values grow less
below discovery. Tony Zimmerman,
who went to Kokomo intending to
install a hydraulic outfit, decided
after looking over the ground, that
the body of pay was not sufficiently
extensive to warrant the outlay.
The stork left a fine baby girl at
the government hospital for Mr. and
Mrs. Boyd Hering.
Miss' Luella Shaffer, former prin
cipal ot the Nenana school, is now
teaching at Honolulu, according to
a letter received in Nenana on a
recent mail.
Adolph Olson, who recently re
turned to Nenana from a winter in
the states, has taken an interest in
a grading contract out the line.
Mrs. Leon Kelum, of the time
keeping offices of the commission
at Healy, made a brief visit in town
this week. She was accompanied on
the return trip by her brother Oscar,
who will spend several days fishing
in the streams near Healy.
