It Is of the greatest Importance In
producing pigs for the market that
they gain In weight as rapidly as pos
sible. The modern hog Is a highly
specialized and efficient machine for
the conversion of grain and roughage
Into edible meat; but to obtain the
greatest efficiency, to make the most
pork from a given amount of feed, to
make the best pork, and to make that
pork most economically the machine
must be kept running to capacity from
birth to the time of marketing. Noth
ing is more important than this fac
tor. The question of breeding, the
kind of feeds fed, and the proportion
of the protein to the fattening ele
ments in the ration are all Important
and are all means to the same end,
but if the greatest profit is to be re
turned to the feeder his pigs must
make maximum gains at nil times.
The first opportunity to force the
pigs comes when they are a few weeks
old. Up to this time they have been
living solely on their dam's milk; In
fact there is no successful substitute.
A Good-Sized, Profitable Litter.
as has been demonstrated by repent
ed failures to raise newly-born pigs on
cow's milk. The milk of the sow is
much richer In protein, fat, and ash
than Is cow's milk, and the latter
makes such a poor substitute that pigs
under two weeks of age usually die
of digestive troubles following its ex
clusive use. After growing for three
weeks the young pigs begin to have an
appetite for some feed to supplement
the sow's milk, and they should be
fed, for unless they are the strain on
the sow will be a very serious one.
The pigs will eat from the sow's
trough, especially if she is being fed
on thin, sloppy feeds. A pen should
be arranged adjoining that of the
dam and separated from It by a par
tition with sufficient room at the bot
tom to allow the pigs to run under. In
the inclosure to be used by the little
pigs place a low, shallow trough to
contain their skim milk or mash.
Best Feeds for Pigs.
The best feeds for pigs at this age
are dairy products, such as skim milk.
or buttermilk. These, mixed with mill
feeds, as middlings, shorts, and even
n cheap grade of flour, or with a meal
of ground oats from which the hulls
have been removed, give excellent sat-
sfactlon. Some feeders use the self-
feeder at this time, placing it inside
creep that will admit the pigs to
their grain nt all times. This Is best
adapted for pigs after six weeks old,
where there Is a lack of skim milk
and they must be prepared for the pe
riod following weaning without this
feed.

The enormous fertilizer consumption
in the United States, amounting to
more than a hundred million dollars
Drior to the war. has undergone in
the last few years a decided change.
not so much In volume as in the com
position of the fertilizing materials.
This has forced a careful study of
ratios of essential plant-food constit
uents on prominent and essential
crops.
Accordingly, small field plats for
the study of fertilizers have been es
tabllshed by the United States de
partment of agriculture on different
soils and under different agricultural
conditions. The test fields now In
operation are at Presque Isle, Me.
State College, Ta. ; Norfolk, Va.;
Florence. S. C. ; Pecan City, Ga. ;
Putney, Ga. ; Thomasville, Ga. ; Mon
tlcello, Fla. ; Orlando, Flc. ; Ashland,
Wis., and Scottsburg, Ind.
Special field tests have been con
ducted to determine the smallest
quantities of potash which will meet
the requirements of the tobacco plant.
more especially on the lighter soils
of the Hue-cured district. Marked re
sponses have been obtained with only
HI pounds, and even as low as 12
pounds, of potash per acre. These
applications have sufficed to prevent
the appearance of the characteristic
symptoms of potash deficiency which
the plant shows when no potash is
supplied in the fertilizer. It has been
possible also to establish an appre
ciable difference between the sulphate
and the muriate of potash in their ac
tion on the plant.
The unusual fertilizer situation has
brought forth numerous fertilizer sub
stitutes of more or less doubtful merit
for which extravagant claims are
made. Companies are organizing to
exploit fertilizer materials, concern
ing the value of which little is known,
and a considerable Increase in such
test work seems necessarj Several
such products have been Investigated
and tested by the department. Some
of them are practically worthless and
others have value entirely out of pro
portion to prices charged.
WAYS TO CONTROL HOG LICE

Rubbing Posts Good.

Lice on hogs . can be controlled in
various ways, but complete eradication
is best secured by the use of dipping
vats, experiments show.
Medicated hog wallows and rubbing
posts, the experiments showed, kept
the number of parasites reduced so
that they caused little or no damage,
but neither of these methods destroyed
all the lice. Crude petroleum was used
on the rubbing posts and the wallows
were medicated with coal-tar creosote
dips, pine tar, crude petroleum, and
bland oils. Crude petroleum and coal
tar creosote dips proved to be more
effective when applied from an ordi
nary sprinkling can than when used in
wallows or on rubbing posts.

Basis for Economical Home
Grown Ration for Cows.
The dairyman who raises an abun
dance of leguminous roughage estab
lishes a basis for an economical home
grown ration which makes it unnec
essary for him to purchase protein
rich feeds. Good, properly cured hay
from any of the common legumes has
a high percentage of digestible pro
tein. An acre of good alfalfa furnishes
twice as much protein as a ton of
bran, four times as much as a ton of
cornmeal and nine times as much as
an acre of timothy. When the ration
consists of an abundance of silage and
good legume hay cows of moderate
production often require but little
grain.
Cows which give more than twenty
five or thirty pounds of milk dally
require the adJition of concentrates
If high production is to be maintained.
In view of the shortage in grains ev
ery dairyman should make every ef
fort to provide an abundance of legu
minous hay by growing legumes suit
able to their soils and sections.
Moving Barb Wire.
Suh a reel is made simply by sawing
off a short length of a round pole and
nailing crosspieces on the ends. The
wire to be moved Is then unfastened
from the posts and thrown out from
them a short distance, after which one
end Is nailed to the reel. The winding
is then easy.
DIFFICULT WINTER CHURNING
Trouble Usually Caused by Incorrect
. Temperature, or Because cf Cream

ALFALFA IS VALUABLE CROP
Failure to get butter "to come" by
churning is not an uncommon experi
ence during winter. The trouble most
often occurs on those farms where
only a few cows are milked. If the
milk of one or two animals Is respon
sible for the difficult churning, other
m'lk when mixed with it will over
come the trouble. Usually when the
trouble occurs it is due to one of two
causes; an Incorrect churning temper
ature, or because of the peculiar com
position of some milk and cream.
Plant Is One of Best Soil Builders, But
Seed Must Be Inoculated
Before Sown.
Alfalfa Is one of the best soil build
ers, but to do its work the seed must
be Inoculated before sown. That Is,
the seed must be treated with bacteria
soll-bullding bacteria we will mil
them. This can be done by coating the
seed with a growth of the bacteria se
cured through your county agent, who
will also tell you how to use it, or by
scattering soil from an alfalfa field
upon the ground to be planted. Soli
on which sweet clover has been grown
will do just as well as soil- from an
llfalfa field.
