Hizh Taxes Cause Citizens to Pass Resolutions I axes, state, county and munic inal. are hish in Mississippi this year, and especially are we bur deneil by taxes pince our crop yield has been light, and prices for farm products so low. Interested in this matter, citi zens of Union county held what might be called an impromptu maps meeting in the court house in New Albany last week, and below we publish a pynopsis of the proceed inc?. as published in the JJew Alba ny Gazette: "A citizens of Union coUntjT we are glad to pay our (?hare of the ex penne of the government, economic ally administered, but we should gee to it that real economy in gov ernmental affair i exercised, and we regret that we have been hither to ii care!es of these matters. "Within the last few years sal arie of officials have been raised; organized effort on the part of those interested ha3 led to very much en larged, if not prodigal appropria tion, and expenditures. Many projects that call for much money have been saddled upon us so that today we find ourselves really tax burdened and with no relief in sigHt. "We offer no special criticism of any one citizen or official at this time, for all of us are more or less guilty, but we sound a note of warning, ana nope mat tnose in authority may hear us. If we have officials that we do not need let those in authority find a way to oust them. 'If there are deputy officials whose services might be dispensed with, let them go. 4 "We pledge our energy. and united effort to sustain, in the right, all those whom we have chosen to serve us, and hope that our board of supervisors and legislators may, as soon as possible, give us some yery much needed retrenchment and reform in the matters that so vitally concern U3." "Whereas, the legislature of the state of Mississippi at its 1920 ses sion created a commission and clothed it with authority to issue and sell interest-bearing bonds to the amount of fiye million dollars for buildings and improvements at our various educational and elee mosynary institutions, and "Whtreas, our taxes are already heavy, amounting to a great bur den upon us, be it therefore "Resolved that we, citizens and tax-payers, of .Union county, do hereby petition and memorialize said commission not to issue and offer for sale any more of these said bonds so authorized, believing, as we do. that no interest of the state will suffer on account of their non issuance. "Resolved that the chairman and secretary of this mass meeting as sembled be authorized and. they are hereby directed to send a copy of these resolutions to Gov. Russell, ex-officio chairman of said commis sion, end that he, the governor, be requested to lay the matter before said commission." REDUCED PRICES on Fleisher's, Yarns. This adver- tisement is in line with the idea which ha3 been promulgated by the Aberdeen Weekly for the past twenty years that oil pools and gas underly much of the territory of this section. People who own lands in this vi cinity owe it to themselves and to the development of their country to call on those, advertising for these leases and find out just why they offer to purchase leases in this sec- ion, and then to be sure, if they dispose of them, to retain an inter est in the lease, so that its devel opment would come back to them in material profits if oil or gas should be found. It will not cost any landholder anything to investigate, and we ad vise all of them to investigate as soon as practicable. Motlow has returned from Mexico Citv, where he attend ed the inauguration of President Obregon, the new president of the Mexican republic, as the personal representative of Governor Russell. Major Motlow was the only Missis sippian present. Sixteen states were represented by either their governors or other prominet citizens. The inauguration took place at midnis'nt, November tne HUth, in the Chamber of Deputies, which was crowded with state officers and invited guests. The oath was ad ministered by the chief justice of the supreme court of Mexico. Major Motlow was greatly im pressed by the cordial feeling man ifest by the Mexicans for the Amer ican visitors, and in the opinion of Maj. Motlow the Mexican has come to realize that it will be to the best interest of his country to get on T friendly terms with bis neighbor to the norm. .President Ubregon is the strongest man the country has produced since the late President Diaz, and being a soldier he real izes that war will not bring peace and prosperity to his people, and he will therefore pursue a policy of pacification and progress, and will endeavor to lead his people in the waj's of peace and prosperity. This is the fourth time in 99 years the president of Mexico has been inaugurated peacefully. Every administration during that time be gan with arms and bloodshed. Mexico City, the capitol of the republic, is a modern city witn a population of 1,000,000. It has a splendid street car system, asphalt streets, good water and light plants, and a sanitary sytem that equals if not leads that of New Orleans in its enforcement. ' . ": i Major Motlow brought back a number of souvenirs, among them some linen-drawn wort and speci mens of the various gold and silver coin9 of the republic The $20 gold pieces, which represent our $20 pieces, is not much more than one half the she of ours, and is worth only about 50 cents on the dollar. Other coins have their Value fixed on the ald dollar basis. No paper money is in circulation, and the Ma .icah is delighted when he gets American paper money. Major Motlow is well pleased with the situation in Mexico, and be lieves that yery soon the. country oil and oas mm 1 Being connected with the Mississippi Petroleum Co., I am authorized to offer one dollar per acre and one-eighth royalty on any amount of land acceptable to this " corporation, ihis being a home corpora tion be sure and see me before you lease your land JL.
