Bond Issues Not Popular lOUt The people generally through the state are noting the cause of existing high taxes, and are refusing to vote additional bond issues upon themselves either for road or edu cational purposes. Most counties are loaded already with bond obligations end voters are writhing under the tax imposed to meet accruing interest, to say nothing of the time when the bonds themselves must be liquidated, Good roads and good schools are the basic essentials in which the happiness of a people and its pos perity is founded. In providing good road3 and good schools the present generation must take eare not to wreck its own for tunes nor handicap the fortunes of the generation that is to succeed it. It would appear wise then in every case where additional bonds are proposed for the people to vote upon themselves for these purposes that prudeuce would suggest that obligations can be imposed to such extent as to eventuate in bank ruptcy. A bankrupt people cannot be happy. To be happy, a people must be prosperous, and to be pros perous no people must owe more than they can reasonably pay. It is reported that the Vardaman opposition is not satisfied with the candidacy of Stephens for the Sen ate; and that is one of the main reasons why Hi Henry took upon himself the calling of a meeting of his brand of democrats to endorse Stephens, as the announcement of Stephens' candidacy created no en thusiasm whatever, and unless there is some kind of an organiza tion behind him he would soon realize the hopelessness of his can didacy. Coast Beacon. Other Officers Invited To Make Reports According to the statement of J. B. Lewis, sheriff, published else where in this paper, the fees, com missions and other emoluments collected by the sheriff and turned nto the county treasury for the fiscal year 1920 exceeded the sala ries paid to the sheriff and all his deputies for that year by 2, 190.69. In other words, if the office had been conducted under the fee sys tem instead of the salary law. the sheriff and his deputies would have received S2.190.69 more than they did. This is a good showing for the sheriff's office. It is now in or der that the chancery and circuit clerk, the board of supervisors and superintendent of education make similar reports so that the people may be able to pass upon the rela tive merits of the fee system and the salary law. It would be im possible for them to do this intel ligently unless they had data that would furnish the comparative ex pense of conducting all county of fices under the two systems. The Weekly would be glad to publish such reports from the of fices above cited. Not to Manipulate Markets ' Farmers are not organizing for the purpose of setting the prices of their cotton, tobacco, or other pro ducts. Farmers cannot compel the world to pay any price they may fix for their products. They could not do this if they wanted to and they ought not to do it if they could, But while farmers are not organizing to fix unreasonable prices or to control the market regardless of supply and demand, and it would not be right for them to do so if they could, they are organ izing to prevent others from con trolling the market. This is right and can be done if the farmers be come sufficiently organized. Farm ers are not organizing to manipu late the markets for their produce regardless of supply and demand, but to prevent others from doing ao. Progressive Farmer. J, Rubel Aberdeen, Miss. Salary Law Saves Taxpayers Money Aberdeen, Sept. 13. To the Taxpayers Monroe County: I have just closed the tax collec tion for the fiscal year 1920, and am today making my final report to the state auditor as requiren by law. In checking up the tax rolls I find that the total assessed valua tion of the county is $12,155,001. I have collected the taxes on $11, 893,422. leaving a balance of 261, 579 valuation uncollectable, which makes approximately a 98 per cent collection. I also beg leave to state for the information of the public that the final accounting for the fees and commissions and other emoluments of this office, under the fee system, the sheriff pocketed; but is now, under the salary system, paid into the county treasury from which the county officers' salaries are drawn, will exceed the salaries of myself, deputies and special help during the tax collecting season by ap proximately 82,190 69, which con stitutes a saving to the taxpayers of the county of that amount. I herewith desire to thank the people of Monroe county for their patient indulgence and valuable as sistance through such a strenuous tax collection. I also desire to thank the citizens of the county and particularly the ladies for the valuable assistance rendered me in running down law violators and keeping crime at a low ebb, and respectfully ask that. if possible, to redouble your efforts in that respect and continue to give me your assistance. Respectfully, J. B. Lewis, Sheriff of Monroe County. All Day Singing GULF COAST EXCURSION TO MOBILE, ALA. - Via M. & O. R. R. - Round Trip Fares War Tax Included 5,QO From Aberdeen, Miss. Gazette in j : l : . : 1 .! "Toleration in politics is not only right, but it is a good asset. Because a man differs from you is no reason why he is your enemy. He may be as honest in his con victions as yon are in yours. It is mere matter of seeing things from different angles. Open minded men rarery fall out over honest dif ferences. They may work together for the good of the state or county on other matters, while opposing each other on some one thing. And besides it is always well to remember that while we may be partisans before the .primaries, we should he patriots thereafter and give lo3al support to the officers so long as they try to do right, wheth er they were our choice or not. The farsighted politician never of fends those who honestly oppose him; he realizes that his adversary in one primary majT be his ally in the next." Unlawful to Kill Doves. Warning has been sent out from Jackson that it is unlawful to kill doves. Violators are liable to in dictment by the Federal grand juries . here is a State law that permits the killing of doves from August 1st to March let, but the Federal law, which prohibits their being killed at any time, is supreme. Back to Stock Keeping" is the banner that should be flung across every highway and byway this fall in every southern state, and any procession organized to march be hind that should be headed by the Duroc hog. Anybody who has any real familiarity with the makine of the corn belt knows that the hog has been the biggest single factor in'farm progress. There is profit in feeding cheap grain to hoes worth from 87.00 to $9.00 per cwt, A considerable slump can take place and still leave the grower of good hog9 a profit on his corn crop, and the three billion yield of 1921, now promised, ensures an abund ance of low-priced feed for fall and winter operations. The red hog is the most effective prosperity booster on the United States map today. He is growing and gaining while his owner is asleep or busy on his daily rounds. He never stops, and every pound he is putting on this yjar, spells profit. Corn and hogs and dairy cattle is the winning combination of the hour and tne money which is being put In the farm purse by it is the money that will sooner or later turn the wheels of factories now idle. Cotton growing as a business may be alright under certain cir cumstances just as growing a sheep for its fleece alone may be economically sound upon certain lands not adapted to ordinary hus bandry. We can remember well when southern Minnesota was a great wheat country. It did not come into its own great wealth, however, until wheat production as a specialty was pushed out to the newer north and west and diversi fied farming substituted. We have no quarrel with either wheat grow ing or cotton planting, but we hope to see the day when our soils will be rationally and regularly fed by the heavy manuring that goes with stock keeping. If we are to farm for the next 75 years as we have farmed for the last 75 years, our great southland, which ought to be the garden spot of America, will be dotted with abandoned farms and civilization will be in its decline. We have got to work for better and more permanent agriculture, and whenever you go in the different countries, you will find the best agriculture, the largest prosperity, where you find the best live stock, you will find the most fertile farms where. you find the most live stock. Now is the ideal time to get a few well bred Duroc-Jersey hogs. E. B. Heller, Sec. State Duroc-Jersey Breeders' Association. Smile and Dont be a Grouch Sugarman's Indicator says: A long face never earned a penny! And a grouch never helped a hu man being. You can afford a smile even if you do not feel like it. A smile does not cost 'yon anything, yet it has a business value. The chap who ducks up smiling when everybody is pulling fong face9 is the chap you want to do business with. The grouch only hegets grouches and grouchers. Lookout that you are not infected by the grouch. His poison is more dangerous than bol shevism, mosquitoe'a and fake "hootch" combined. Smile when you mean it, and smile when you don't, and keep right on with a cheerful mug. It is eood business, It helps your digestion. And it makes you wel-' come everywhere.
