CITY OF BILOXI HAS A
NEW CENSUS TAKEN
SHOWING THE ‘POPULATION -IS
GROWING RAPIDLY HAD 5000
IN 1900, HAS 8000 NOW -AT THIS
RATE BILOXI WILL BE IN THE
10,000 CLASS WHEN THE NEXT
CENSUS IS TAKEN BY UNCLE
SAM.
Biloxi will have to grow some yet be
fore she can boast lo,oto inhabitants.
C. M. Wilkes has just completed the
taking of the census of the city, and the
figures show that there are in Biloxi
8,058 men, women and children, white
and colored. Of these 1,277 are colored,
leaving a white population of 6,781.
The Third Ward has the largest popula
tion, the First Ward coming next, while
the Fourth Ward contains the largest
number of negroes. The population by
wards follows:
White. Colored.
First Ward 2,118 250
Second Ward 1,092 211
Third Ward 2,188 214
Fourth Ward 1,383 602
Totals 6,781 1,277
When the United States Government
took the census in 1900 Biloxi had 5,467
inhabitants. That was six years ago,
and the increase since that time has
amounted to 2,591, or 47 per cent. The
increase per year has been on the
average 432 persons, or, roughly, 8 per
cent. If, therefore, the population for
the next four years increases at the
same rate as it has during the past six
years, Biloxi should have in 1910 2,578
more persons than she has now, or a
total of 10,636, so that the next time
Uncle Sam comes around to see how
many people he has, Biloxi should go in
the ten thousand class.

A suit of unusual interest to users of
light and water supplies by corporations
has been brought in the chancery court
at Little Rock, Arkansas. The suit is
to compel the corporation to connect its
wires to the residence of a citizen who
has complied with all the requirements
of the company except to install a meter
to measure the current that may be con
sumed. The citizen contends that the
meter does not belong co him aud is
placed in his residence for the protec
tion of the company, and should there
fore be paid for by the company. The
suit presents the contention, whether
the merchant who sells a commodity
should furnish the scales or require his
customer to do it.—Aberdeen Weekly,

SAW MILL REFUSE IS
MADE INTO ALCOHOL.
FACTORY FOR THIS PURPOSE
STARTED IN HATTIESBURG
THREE YEARS AGO HAS BE
GUN ACTIVE OPERATIONS.
j.,
The plant of the Lignum Product
Company at Hattiesburg, Mississippi,
which manufactures commercial and
medicinal alcohol from saw dust, shav
ings and other saw mill refuse, has got
down to practical operations after three
years devoted to the construction of the
plant and experimentation with machi
nery employed in the various processes.
Several hundred barrels of the product
have already been turned out, and a
government storekeeper is in charge
permanently to look after the revenue.
The plant has cost close to half a mil
lion dollars, but it is complete in every
respect, and opens up anew field for the
use of the wood peculiar to this section.
The results of the experiments here have
been watched closely by scientists and
distillers in all parts of the world, for
the cheapness of the material from
which this plant makes the alcohol
makes it probable that the sawdust
plants will drive all others out of busi
ness. Already plans are on foot for es
tablishing several similar plants on the
Pacific coast, and the local distillery
has just finished a run of a car load of
sawdust seat here from Washington
State for the purpose of ascertaining if
the Washington firm would turn out
alcohol of as good quality and in as
large quantities as the yellow pine. The
results were entirely satisfactory. For
the past few rqonths the local plant has
been in the hands of a New York com
pany which has been putting the machi
nery in condition for practical use. The
plant will be returned to the Lignum
Product Company in a few weeks, and
thereafter operation will be continuous
at full capacity. The plant is of im
mense proportions, covering several
acres in area, and including immense
buildings. The company has had a
number of specially designed cars built
for hauling the sawdust from the mills
in this part of the country.
