He is an excellent gentleman in every respect; lifts a line war record, is a Democrat ot the staunchest and tiucst kind, is noted for his integrity anil business capacity, and is very popular in Jackson The fact that he holds n 1 i.nnil position on the railroad, r.o doubt contributed to his defeat. There are some peculiar features connected with this post office elec tion. Some leading Democrats of .Jackson were opposed to the plan of holding an election, taking the ground that the Congressman should follow the old custom of selecting and recommending a good parly man tor the place. It is said that there is considerable dissatisfaction with the result, and that objections will be made to the method of eon dueling the election, and to tin eligibility of some ot the voters. It is said that Congressman Barksdale'oted for Mr. CTnglmn. and that Senator George did not vte nt f»• 1. It mnv be a frr-fetched construc tion, but some people contend that the selection of Postmaster McKee’s deputy i« an endorsement- of Mc Kee’s administration of the Jackson post office, ami that it may nmv be a difficult matter to remove him on a charge of "offensive partisanship " It is said that the North Ward of Jackson, the Gihralter of Democra cy of that citv. the home of the “old Guard,’’greatly contributed to the defeat of Mr. Clingan, who is a Democrat of the Andrew Jackson type, and to the success of the Re publican postmaster’s chief deputy. Another feature of this affair is that Congressman Barksdale will now be compelled to recommend tin man he did not vote f u\ But. ac cording to the Washington Post, Philadelphia Times, and other Ad ministration organs, Mr 1!atksd.alc is “under a cloud his name is <m a sort of “black list’’ which Mr. Cleveland issupp- s d to keep, and his recommendation may not now bo wortli am t hing. Probably it woul-1 have been best to make sure of a vacancy in the Jackson postoflioe before holding the election As it is now. Gen Mo Kee still holds the fort, and his effi cient, polite and popular depu-y is in the line of promotion. We have been informed that nt similar elections ir.
